VirtualBox going KVM for the core? Neat.
Hopefully they fixed the bugs with Windows running with GPU acceleration as well. VMware is still the best on that regard but they haven't caught up with Wayland atm (or GTK4 rather).
And no, GPU passthrough does not count. It has to be an easy "install guest drivers, done" sorta deal. No dealing with IOMMUs or VFEIEIOs.
As I setup a #Windows VM on my new laptop, I'm actually going to do two things differently.
The first thing I'm doing differently is using Virtualbox instead of #virt-manager. While I love to use the latter, I think #VirtualBox will have better support for Windows guests. Consequently, I'll be using Virtualbox, but only for Windows. For other OSes, including #FreeBSD, virt-manager and KVM will be my preferred hypervisor.
The second thing I'm doing differently is using a shared folder for all my projects. This way, I don't have to duplicate my work across two different repositories. If I'm working on a change to something, my work is already synced, and I don't need to perform extra steps to get my work over from the VM to my computer. This should help speed up my workflow a bit. I will also be doing this for KVM guests too.
Nothing too much, but some things that should improve my workflow a little bit! I'm still getting setup in the Windows VM as we speak (installing Visual Studio), but once we get up and going I'll work on some Windows-specific issues (namely DPI scaling not working; let's hope that I can get that fixed!).

VirtualBox receives experimental KVM support
In current developer builds of VirtualBox, KVM support appears for the first time. The function is experimental and only available through manual source builds.

The other day, I booted up a #Ubuntu #2510 just to see how things are on the #Gnome #desktop. That #DestopEnvironment is not for me. #Kubuntu #2510 looked great and felt great, made me excited for #2604 #LTS. We are so lucky to have so much choice for pretty much everything. I think it is about time to fire up #virtualbox and take other flavours and #distros for a spin. It has been years since I have used #Xubuntu and longer for #Lubuntu. #OpenSource is just the best 😀
Turns out, old #DanteController 4.8.1.2 for #Audinate #Dante #AudioOverIP can be installed directly in #Wine / #Linux even.
However, it doesn't work, it can't see the Dante devices in my network.
So, I'm stuck with #Windows10 in #Virtualbox for which that old version still works. Until you resize the VirtualBox window while running Dante Controller, because then you have to push the reset button of that virtual machine…
Today, #Linux is making me have me a bad day again. No, actually not true. #Audinate is to blame. Their #DanteController software for their #Dante #AudioOverIP does not come as a Linux version. It also does not work in #Wine. And recently, it has stopped working properly in #Windows10 in #Virtualbox. It just crashes.
Dante Controller is a Java application, but not platform independent. They don't want to, the folks at Audinate.
So whenever there is something Dante going on in #EventTech, I need to bring a separate laptop with me.
Fun fact is: If software is not available for Linux, people always blame Linux. Never the manufacturer of that software.
Nobody blames Google if there is an app only available for IOS, but not for Android.
EDIT: My own NextCloud now saved me with an old Dante Controller 4.8.1.2 found in its "deleted files" compartment that doesn't seem to have the issue. (Screenshot below.)
VirtualBox developers confirm an early but usable KVM backend, currently available only through manual source builds.

If you are updating your #linuxmint to kernel 6.17.0-14 and you are using #virtualbox make sure to have version >= 7.2 installed. Otherwise the update will fail.
You can get the latest version from [1]. For Mint 22.3 use Ubuntu 24.04.
