Once again #KDE tries to get rid of minority distributions. This time by replacing SDDM with PLM (plasma login manager). PLM depends on systemd.
So sooner or later no KDE for #alpineLinux, #FreeBSD, #Gentoo, #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, #Slackware, #VoidLinux, etc.

For #BLFS it is no problem as BLFS itself recently discontinued its non-systemd version.

I was only getting around 140MB/s max from the old Samsung 840. Swapped in this Crucial BX500 and now Iโ€™m getting around 266MB/s. This will be a huge win for #NetBSD on the Wii U.

As a proof, scrot output on NetBSD... aka, screenshot ๐Ÿ™‚
Still, fonts are missing, but I only needed to download a few configs from my website to make it usable for me.
ratpoison, dmenu, firefox, emacs - and I can make a lot of work done...
#netbsd #ratpoison #xterm

An output of the fastfetch command on NetBSD, showing the name of the operating system, my window manager (ratpoison), amount of RAM (too little) and the CPU (old crap). Nothing more is visible since ratpoison is very minimalistic and simple (which I like).

@ptribble I've been quite impressed by @fastmail's spam filtering. It took a while to make it recognise that anything from #NetBSD's "Charlie Root" was legit, but other than that the only kosher emails it thinks are spam are invoices that do look hella spammy even when they're not.

@lcheylus @bentsukun is a niche technical pearl for niche userbase, so doesn't really matter if that works for them.

In the end most `*netbsd*` targets are Tier 3.

Arguments against incorporating Rust into the NetBSD kernel - Post by Benny Siegert

Every now and then when I come back to use my daily driver running #Debian #Linux, I got surprised why #apt still does not provided short-formed commands like #pkg in #FreeBSD and #pkgin in #NetBSD do such as:

# FreeBSD
pkg ins vim # same as pkg install vim
pkg sea vim # same as pkg search vim

# NetBSD
pkgin in vim # same as pkgin install vim
pkgin se vim # same as pkgin search vim

# while in Debian
apt search vim # no apt se/sea
apt install vim # no apt in/ins
#Unix #BSD #FOSS

"There are many architectures that NetBSD supports where Rust is not available. This is probably the most important argument against Rust."

Rust in the NetBSD kernel seems unlikely

Rust is everywhere, and it's no surprise it's also made its way into the lowest levels of certain operating systems and kernels, so it shouldn't be surprising that various operating system developers have to field questions and inquiries about Rust. NetBSD developer Benny Siegert wrote a blog post about this very subject, and in it, details why it's unlike

Damn!

Happily searching the #EpsteinFiles for bizarre inclusions of computer software stuff (e.g. Adobe Flash README, #NetBSD, Python), I tried looking up qmail.

I stumbled upon #PeterMandelson e-mails that the journalists won't find because one has to understand Received: headers to know whom they are from, and the base64 encoding of the body hides the text from the search engines.

Since my home server not intended for use by any people outside of my city (plus some VPN endpoints in other countries) โ€” it is ok to ban some unwanted countries and cities from which I don't expect anything good, except attempts to hack my box to use my resources or set me up :drgn_sigh: .

So I added some GeoIP blocking to the npf with script to update GeoIP list โ€” I blocked China, Iran, North Korea, etc and Moscow (because there are a lot of government and commercial backed bots coming from here). Results are good โ€” the bots don't disappeared completely but the speed of adding new IPs to the blacklist is decreased :drgn_happy_blep:

Sadly, I was unable to add USA and UK to the list, because looks like there are some limits (not found how to increase them :drgn_flat_sob: ), which disallows to load a lot of CIDRs for these countries to the blacklist.

#NetBSD #npf #bots #selfhosting

Graph of the count of banned IPs per week. There are two red tangents on the two points โ€” before and after the GeoIP bans were enabled. And the two red lines, parallel to the X axis.
The resulting derivatives are 0.59 and 0.38, so the speed of raising the values (count of blocked bots) are decreased.Part of the script to update npf blacklists. Script contents:
