I put the 2015 MacBook pro back on Ultramarine but this time with KDE Plasma. I'm much happier now. Back to rendering videos. 🐧 #linux

To backup Home directory or anything else, someone just recommended me a GNOME app with a very nice GUI called as "Pika Backup".

I am going to try it soon. Their webpage looks nice and they list what the app does:
- Create backups locally and remotely
- Set a schedule for regular backups
- Save time and disk space because Pika Backup does not need to copy known data again
- Encrypt your backups
- List created archives and browse through their contents
- Recover files or folders via your file browser

I posted this some time ago, but now that I have a few blind friends who are involved in programming, and especially the musical side of things, I figured I would try again. To summarise. I want to see if it is possible to make pre-electric recordings sound like early electric ones. So one from 1903 might sound like it came from 1930. I doubt we could go any higher than the 1940's, if that, given the constraints of acoustic recording, but it would still be a huge improvement in sound. Perhaps, with the right software, some frequences can be restored. The trouble is that there are only a few such programs and all are inaccessible with screen readers. I explain things more fully at the below link. Normally, this is a subreddit about opera recordings and singers from the 1950's and earlier, so if you have no clue about this but like opera, feel free to join us in general.

Ok, #Linux people! I’ve pretty much decided on my distro (CachyOS since my pc is only used for gaming), but I’m not sure what desktop environment to use. I’m not particularly fussed about getting a Mac-like or Windows-like environment (honestly, I think I’d like something completely different so I don’t get frustrated when it DOESN’T act like the OS it looks like), but I’d like to know what people are using and why.

Heya folks, routine updates on the package server have gone slightly wrong. Unfortunately, this coincides with our hosting provider also performing routine maintenance, so we can't fix it for a few hours. Nothing is lost, and Solus packages will be available again very soon!

I have two directories that must contain identical files. I can use jdupes or fdupes to find & list files between these directories that are duplicates. How can I do the opposite of this & find files that are different from eachother? My original idea for this was to hash all files, sort by file name so lines would only differ by hash, then use diff to pick out file names from wrong hashes, but I'm not sure how to process the output of diff to get this.

I do a monthly computer giveaway for my business.

Had a very pleasant phone conversation with this month's winner. He's an older retired guy. Former business owner. He was sick of Windows and started using Linux on his own a couple years ago.

So the computer I will be getting to him will have Linux on it (though he may erase and install his own). He prefers Linux Mint, but wants to try Zorin.

I was asked about the @Vivaldi Browser. It is a powerful tool and has some nice features, but I cannot recommend it because it is not fully open source. Following GNU Freedom 1, I believe users must have the right to study and change their software, not just audit some of the files.

With Firefox now introducing a one click AI opt out in version 148, it remains the superior recommendation for people who value privacy and code transparency over proprietary UI features. Don't get me wrong, I am completely #NoAI but knowing a browser has a toggle I can verify is better than trusting a corporation’s word.

Vivaldi claims only 5% is proprietary, yet they keep it closed to prevent forks. They benefit from the open-source community while intentionally blocking others from doing the same. That is hypocritical.

For most people, @librewolf and @zenbrowser remain my top recommendations.

Like, look at this shit lol. It's always the browser/electron shit that's hoggggging my memory on #Linux like #Firefox and #VSCode. Idk how these shitty apps could survive just fine on #macOS. Anyway, as shitty as memory management can be on Linux, if even that, this is still kind of an improvement where it freezes for a bit and then terminates the apps hogging the memory - not pretty, disruptive maybe and can make u lose shit u need, but works. Previously, on Linux, shit would just freeze indefinitely and you'd need a painful, hard reboot to fix it.
