In the 1850s, Canadian chemist Thomas Sterry Hunt developed a green ink resistant to chemical erasure—ideal for printing secure banknotes. The formula was adopted by U.S. printers during the Civil War when greenbacks were introduced in 1862. A neatly arranged set of uncirculated Iraqi banknotes totaling 1,000,000 IQD: twenty crisp 25,000 IQD notes and ten 50,000 IQD notes, all issued between 2020–2025. The 25,000 IQD note features a Kurdish peasant in traditional dress on the front and King Hammurabi receiving the Code of Laws on the back. The 50,000 IQD note displays the Gali Ali Beg waterfall, Euphrates waterwheel, and palm groves on the obverse, with Tigris-Euphrates delta fishermen and reed houses on the reverse. All notes are made of hybrid polymer with embedded security threads, showing sharp corners, original sheen, and no folds or handling marks. Serial numbers are consecutive or near-consecutive. This week's E-Sylum has a piece on a 2004 Florida United Numismatics Convention note which honours firefighters. Several key notes on the piece:
- the year 1679 was when the first fire engine was imported into the US and the first paid fire department was founded.
- Microlines read "Saint Florian" the patron saint of firefighters.
- The year 1736 was when the first volunteer fire company was formed (I suspect some impromptu ones happened at any particular fires before that though)
- 1852 hidden in the fire truck was when the first fire alarm system in Boston MA was installed.
- 10/9 is Fire Prevention Week each year
