When i press the "delete" key on my keyboard, and i'm using my terminal program (kitty), it should delete the character to the right, like Ctrl-D does. That seems achievable, right?

@adamsdesk well, according to @rasteri zhis works because #MDA has it's own #DMA address space vs. #CGA / #HGA / #EGA / #VGA, so in theory #Linux should be able to implement this, tho I'm nit shure if current versions of Linux still support it.

• I really should read the #dcumentation, but I hoped someone on the #Fediverse would actually knows it...

That being said this does require a setup with a seperate #MDA card exclusively occupying it's address space and a #VGA adaptor that ignores it.

• Most #SOM|s and #embedded as well as #consumer #GPU|s don't do that but take on both address spaces and simply disconnect the MDA part in terms of #BIOS compatibility once they get switched into #VGA mode and only switch back when the VGA mode is turned off.

Also this combo is rather uncommon and basically died with multi-display cards in lieu of #TTY-Terminal access.

#Montag – morgens voller Energie und Elan den PC starten, um dann schockiert auf den #tty Login-Prompt, statt das #ly Anmeldefenster zu starren. Dann findet sich in der #systemctl-Liste weder ein ly-Dienst noch #network-Service. Ja, ich hatte am Freitag noch eine Systemaktualisierung durchgeführt. Da war weder ungewöhnliches noch verdächtiges dabei und lief fehlerfrei durch. Nun existiert das Kommando #startx angeblich nicht mehr.

Auf welchem Stockwerk sich meine Laune befindet, dürfte leicht zu erraten sein 🤬 Nein, ich habe keine Motivation zur Fehlersuche. Mir hängen solche Sperenzien zum Hals heraus 🤯 Früher fand ich sowas spannend, weil es mich von wichtigen Dingen ablenkte. Doch diese Zeiten sind vorbei, ich will einfach nur ungestört arbeiten. Vielleicht wechsel ich doch wieder von #ArchLinux zu #Debian. Wenn "rolling" mir immer wieder das System zerschießt, kann ich darauf verzichten. #Linux

The fix: the bit 4 idler sits on a shaft that's independent of the other idlers. This smaller shaft is tilted slightly. I adjusted the bottom plate that holds the gear assembly and (somehow) managed to get it in a position that relaxed the sticky (mechanical) bit. #repair #tty

#finale suffer from "#vi / #vim syndrome" where it's not working the way people expect shit to work.

• Seriously, this is something that #nano does better by showing the necessary #shortcuts, but for #GUI & #TUI apps that ain't designed for a #TTY - #Terminal like #ed, this is just bad.

Whilst Vim [ & Neovim have their reasons to be "archaic" by modern standards it's pretty clear why noone but a sadistic person who wants to either torture or discourage curious people would force this upon people these days.

At the end of ‘83 a school mate was talking about getting an #IBMPCjr (nicknamed Peanut; sold as the #IBM JX here in Aus/NZ and JP). His dad, an IBM exec never came through with it but it was obvious the 8080 was suitable for computing. Three years later, that became my second PC an 8080 XT.

I only just learned you can use the mouse in the TTY! (The Linux text-only console you get to by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, F2, etc.)

Some applications that enable this are gpm and consolation.

consolation worked better for me, especially when in tmux; however, I still can't get scrolling with middle button and trackpoint to work, which is what would be the most useful for me. I don't know if it has to do with consolation, tmux mouse bindings, my particular ThinkPad model, etc. I can't find anything online about this, so if you've also dabbled in this, please share your experience!

I spent some time playing with #tty last night and I realized what I did wrong last time when I tried to talk to a tty. The response does not have to arrive in one read call.

I also ran into 7bit vs 8 bit encoding difference that my parser did not handle.

What bugs me the most is lack of sensible single place that documents all of the protocols involved. There's a range of odd websites, man pages, PDFs and websites but nothing cohesive.

Please tell me I'm missing a well-know resource.

Я наконец перевернул экран в TTY и отключил дублирование на другие мониторы, и при переходе в TTY из X не сбивается

Прывiтаначкi, у меня четыре монитора - три HD через DisplayPort, и один большой 4k через HDMI, перевёрнутый. Когда из коробки мы в TTY (это такой встроенный в ядро терминал, до запуска startx , туда ещё можно перейти сжав Ctrl-Alt-F<1-8>) то по дефолту все экраны показывают кусок буфера - кусок потому что экраны горизонтальные и вертикальные, и разрешения разные. Ну ладно, и так можно жить конечно, но годами я немного мечтал о том что у меня получится сделать нормально - чтобы TTY жил лишь в одном большом вертикальном (перевёрнутом) мониторе. И так и сяк помогал мне бесплатный няшка Gemini CLI (которого иногда я читал после перезагрузки повернув голову на бок из-за некорректных настроек), на каждую мою реплику начиная ответ с того что я молодец и какой правильный вопрос задал и как в корень зрю и в отличие от него ещё не забыл что делали три шага назад. Теперь рабочее решение: /etc/default/grub
