Okay, so if you own a FW13 AMD first gen (Ryzen 7040), you probably don't want to upgrade to the latest BIOS (3.18) as it seems to break booting up when connected to a USB or Thunderbolt docking station.
blocking the update for now.

Interesting problem that’s just emerged with my home desktop (NUC form factor) mini PC. Occasionally it gets #stuck with the #BIOS “American Megatrends” screen on it and doesn’t load #GRUB. It’s only happened a few times so far, and I’ve just switched it off and on again and all is well. Anyone else seen this behaviour? My first idea (when I get to it) will be to take the top off and see if the SATA SSD with GRUB and Ubuntu on it is connected properly.

Fun fact: when running #Linux on a #retrocomputing machine whose #BIOS has the 8GB limit, you can still boot, but you need /boot to be on a separate partition that's below the 8GB limit.
Unless you're using a bootloader that has its own ATA driver, at least. Back then I was using LILO which used BIOS calls to read disks. Not sure what modern GRUB does.
I spent this evening trying to get my physical retro PC, a Pentium 166MHz running Windows 98 SE, to connect to an 80GB IDE harddisk. The BIOS seems to be limited to a maximum of 8GB, but in the end I managed to get it working. I needed to use Ontrack's Disk Manager 2000 to install a DDO driver.
I guess I became too lazy! Emulating old hardware is so much more convenient than dealing with real-world limitations like this. 😅
@adamsdesk well, according to @rasteri zhis works because #MDA has it's own #DMA address space vs. #CGA / #HGA / #EGA / #VGA, so in theory #Linux should be able to implement this, tho I'm nit shure if current versions of Linux still support it.
That being said this does require a setup with a seperate #MDA card exclusively occupying it's address space and a #VGA adaptor that ignores it.
Also this combo is rather uncommon and basically died with multi-display cards in lieu of #TTY-Terminal access.

It seems my #bios does revert some setting change I made after I turn off my computer. I assume it has to do with shutting down the computer through #cli with "doas systemctl poweroff". Does anybody see the problem with this command? Or do I have to look elsewhere for the reason of why the case fan settings gets reverted after every reboot? #linux
