Math hivemind: I'm looking for something on the mathematics of kumihimo braiding.
The version I know of has a disk with 8 slots, and you start with 7 strings in slots. You take one of the strings, pull it out of its slot, and put it into the empty one, and repeat. It's a super simple way to make a nice braiding pattern.

The person who showed this to me told me which number of strings worked, but I forget what she said. If you just try to do the same thing with, say, 5 strings -- make 6 slots, pull up a string two slots from the empty one, put it in the empty one, repeat -- it didn't seem to work. So it's not just 2 being relatively prime to 5 or 7.
Anyone have any links or resources on this?

Because my brain was to bored by just weaving with two³ bobbins and had the weird thought of "Lace making, but with weaving!" and i could not find anything like that on the net⁴.

Question for pppl who are capable of #braiding natural hair or are skilled at doing small braids in straight hair.
I am currently growing out one side of my undercut and let's say: the current lenght is too short to go into a pony tail, too long to look not ridiculous
I have seen finger wizards braiding real short hair strands and would like to know: is the lenght on the foto enough to braid these strands at the side of my head without extensions in order to stop this silly look?

I just saw a video of someone doing braiding using a Japanese stool like device (marudai) and also a braiding disk (kumihimo), both reminded me of dodecahedrons (the mysterious Roman gadget described in the linked video).
What if the knobs weren‘t there to hold the string but rather to simply keep the braiding strands separated from each other like with those braiding devices? Using it for braiding would also allow to produce braids of different thicknesses, thus the different sizes of the holes would make more sense and it doesn’t matter that the individual devices are of slightly different sizes. Now the question would be why soldiers would need so many braided strings.
As a femme-presenting Black lesbian, I find it jarring to hear conservative views on women's autonomy, sexism, marriage, and queerness from some braiders while getting my hair done.
This contrasts with the usual warmth and comfort in hairbraiding environments."

I've ordered what I thought were silicone #kumihimo bobbins but those are hard plastic bobbins for some old Singer sewing machines, just look really similar. Meanwhile I realized that a simple cardboard shape would work just as well.
Not easy to cut out, so I also 3d printed one. Plastic slit hold less than cardboard but using both slits, it works fine.
I have transferred all 8 sewing bobbins of thin yarn to these cards and am ready to start #braiding :)
