So, back when I was a teenager, I damaged the top of this antique table with nail polish remover. My grandmother was understandably upset, and said the table was mine, as it was ruined in her opinion. Years later, after she had passed away, I refinished the table's top to look like marble. It took a while to do, but it's still one of my best refinishing jobs. If she were still around, I think she would have been impressed (and would have wanted the table back).
Also, this was my witchy altar for many, many, years...! đ§đŒââïž
Building a #Sustainable home in the #Australian #Outback
May 25, 2025
"In 2024 Anika Molesworth and her partner set out to build a family home in a remote part of New South Wales. They were looking to create, in Anikaâs words, 'something comfortable, a beautiful space that complemented the land, and a house that doesnât cost the planet.' That was the mission. But after speaking with various builders, both local and from afar, and getting ideas on new house builds (mainly kit-home/modular type things) they all just felt wrong. The ideas they were presenting and the materials they would be using, went against the whole idea of sustainability.
"Faced with these new-build issues, Anikaâs attention turned to an abandoned homestead on her familyâs property. 'It was very humble. Like seriously humble. Tiny windows, small dark rooms, not an ounce of insulation. Never connected to any services. It was going to be a big task making it comfortable.' But Anika could see the potential.
"A few local builders were invited over to have a look and give their ideas. The first one said 'better to build a new home using refrigerator panels.' Which he happened to sell, dismissing the renovation concept as a waste of time and money. Time and again Anika bumped up with people who just could not see the vision and had no idea what she was talking about with ârecycling, reclaiming and using natural materialsâ. Local suppliers â from electricians to plumbing â just tried to sell her the same cheap, imported products. When Anika spoke to a local plumbing supplier about composting toilets she was simply met with eye rolling."

So, I finally finished repairing and refinishing my grandmother's bookcase. The shelves were originally attached with pegs, but after making structural repairs, I could only put pegs into one side of the bookshelves. It seems my grandfather had that problem as well, since I saw that he put a nail into one of the pegged spots. With the pegs, the bookshelf was foldable. I noticed that a lot of furniture my grandparents owned was on wheels (probably because they moved around a lot)? Anyhow, I'm quite pleased with the results, and now my grandmother's bookcase is in my upstairs hallway, and is filled with cryptozoology books, history books, and tomes about spooky lore and other subjects related to my fiction writing.

For full circle skirt it is possible to adjust according an increased waist measurement, if you can change or lengthen the waistband. To do it remove the waistband, cut off a slim strip from top and add (maybe different) waistband back on. Today I'm fixing my full circle wrap skirt, and removing mere 2 cm from top added >12 cm to waist! I like contrasting waistbands for my skirts, but this time I will reuse the original, because it has long ends for tying.

#RepairCafe Guide - Sharpening knives and scissors
Excerpt: "Albert recommends Japanese #whetstones instead [of a knife sharpener]. These are rectangular blocks grinding stone [I use one of these]. 'Many people know them. They are grey and light grey. You can buy them at the hardware store and you can get your knives pretty sharp with them.' With these sharpening stones, itâs vital to always sharpen the knife at the same angle. 'You have to keep the angle constant and go over the stone with it. If you start twisting your knife, youâll never get it sharp.'
"There are all kinds of tutorials and instructional videos available on the internet about sharpening knives."

#Canada - #RepairCafé sews, bolts, and seals up the leaky, slow, and damaged
Written by Hayden Michaels Tuesday, Apr 01 2025, 6:00 AM
"The #SwiftCurrent Repair Café has once again come and gone and left the world a better working place.
"From clocks to mixers, from radios to jackets, almost anything that could fit through the door was examined, diagnosed, and put back in working order. While the volunteers can't tackle anything too out there or too large, they make sure to stitch, staple, and suture what they can mend.
"This year, Keegan Story and the rest of the volunteer handymen and women were happy to help fix 80 per cent of the items brought to them.
" 'Electronics and appliances are one of our busier areas,' shared Story. 'Today they fixed a kid's toy DVD player, a vacuum cleaner and a few other miscellaneous electronics.'
"One of the special booths at this event was the #PinballMachine corner. Kids were infatuated as local Pinball Wizard/technician Darwin Gooding built one of his '70s machines and let them play with the finished product.
"Other interesting fixes were computers, mechanical clocks, clothing, and just about anything and everything else that Swift Current brought out.
"The goal of the Repair Café is to mend items that normally would go in the trash. Be it their disposable nature, or the unrealistic monetary nature of certain fixes, this bi-yearly event unshackles practicality in favour of keeping what is old, new, and what is broken, pristine.
A child learns about circuitry, causing a rotor to fly up, up, and away!A child learns about circuitry, causing a rotor to fly up, up, and away!
" 'We've got a lot of people here that are handy that just like to offer their support,' said Story. 'We're keeping some stuff out of the landfill and keeping some money in people's pockets.'
"The next Repair Café will be held on October 25, 2025. Anyone looking to volunteer is encouraged to reach out via the Repair Café website or to contact them on Facebook."
