Another early #SolarPunkSunday post!

Join #SeedSaversExchange to celebrate #NationalSeedSwapDay!

Saturday, January 31, 2026, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm at the Vesterheim Commons.

This event is free and open to the public. Vesterheim Commons, 508 West Water St., Decorah, Iowa, 52101. All ages are welcome!

"Festivities will include:

- Community seed swap plus seeds from the Seed Savers Exchange seed bank
- Short presentations on the seed saving and the history of Seed Savers Exchange

Who attends a seed swap?

Everyone is welcome. Never gardened before? Come and bring your curiosity! Gardened and saved seeds your whole life? Bring your seeds and stories to share.

What do I need to bring to this event?

It’s not required to bring anything to the seed swap. If you have seeds you’d like to share, please bring them! If possible, bring them in a labeled container with the crop type, variety, and year grown. If you have extra ziplock bags, paper packets, or other potential seed containers for seeds you receive, bring those as well.

Seed Savers Exchange will bring empty, blank packets and writing utensils for people to use.

At seed swap events hosted by Seed Savers Exchange, there are set guidelines for the types of seeds allowed.

Allowed

- Open-pollinated seeds.
- Locally saved seeds.
- Excess-bought seeds.
- Excess seeds donated by a seed company.

Prohibited

- Seeds or plants that are considered illegal, either federally in the United States of America or in the state of the event.
- Genetically engineered plants, F1 hybrids, poisonous, noxious, or controlled seeds, and plants.
- Patented varieties. Although gardeners can grow and save patented varieties, it is illegal to distribute them. Refer to the USDA website for a list of patented varieties.
- Unknown seed from volunteer plants."

#MinotND - Community #SeedSwap event set for Jan. 31

Jan 23, 2026

"NDSU Extension-Ward County is inviting gardeners, seed savers and anyone curious about growing their own plants to join Ward County Master Gardeners at a Community Seed Swap, Saturday, Jan. 31, from 1-3 p.m. The event will be at the Ward County Extension Office, 900 13th St. SE, Minot.

"This free, family-friendly gathering celebrates #NationalSeedSwapDay, a long-standing tradition which brings people together to exchange seeds, stories and gardening knowledge. National Seed Swap Day, held annually on the last Saturday in January, serves as a reminder to gardeners that spring is on its way and marks an ideal time for preparation of starting seeds indoors. Additionally, the exchange of seeds perpetuates biodiversity throughout the #community.

"Whether an experienced seed saver or just getting started, the event offers a friendly place to meet fellow gardening enthusiasts and discover new varieties for the 2026 growing season.

"Light refreshments will be provided, and #MasterGardeners will be on hand to answer questions about seed saving, including best practices for labeling and storing seeds, as well as other gardening tips. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to bring seeds in clearly labeled packets with plant name, variety and year collected to make swapping easier for everyone.

"For more information, contact the Ward County Extension Office at 857-6444."

Bulletin #4311, Planning and Managing a Community “Giving” Garden in Maine

By John Jemison, Extension Professor, Soil and Water Quality, University of Maine Cooperative Extension

"This guide is intended to help anyone who has an interest in community gardening to do that task with skill and capacity. Gardening isn’t difficult, but gardening well is not easy. This guide can be useful for anyone who gardens, but I have designed it intentionally to help people start community gardens and community giving gardens. This guide provides information on gardening methods; pest management; what, when, and how to plant specific vegetables with a focus on New England growing conditions; delivery program basics; and putting the garden to bed for the winter. I have also included some links to recipes that can be given to the food recipients so that they know what to do with the foods we provide."

Includes topics such as:
- Starting a Garden Program
- Volunteers and Volunteer Management
- Why Raised Beds
- Proper Use of Compost
- Feeding Plants
- Controlling Insects and Other Pests Organically
