Yes, Virginia, I do write down some of the more esoteric techniques (e.g. French seamed trouser pockets with cut-on waistband facings) that I use on the relevant pattern pieces. Starting to prototype my first backpack. Made the initial prototype out of paper to get a feel for the shape I have in mind. I find it easier to iterate with paper and tape before continuing the design in software and fabric.

My advice about #sewing is just to start! Use whatever machine you can get your hands on: borrow, or buy one of the many refurbished machines on the market. Begin with a variety of pillow coverings and bags as you gain confidence with the equipment and materials. If there are fabric resellers nearby, pick up low-cost fabric to experiment with.
And then, there's a whole new world out there. Make whatever it is that you want to have!

Recs for ideal machines or resources for patterns are all welcome! To get something to stick I like to do something small and satisfying and then aim for something bigger.

Do you think there are left handed sewing machines?

Most mechanical devices are right handed, it's assumed to be the default regardless of user, and sewing machines are amongst those.

Left handed sewing machines. That's got to be a thing, right?

My bag is done! Such a fun sewing project. The pattern is Apex carry from In complete stitches. I've used fabrics that I had stashed, leftovers from other projects mostly. The white fabric is a tablecloth my grandma used to have, complete with old coffee stains. I only needed to buy the zipper, the green strap and anorak snap buttons (the material was too thick for the snap buttons I had at home).

Lisa's #NeoVictorianBlouse (v1.1 ) is done! This figured silk chiffon that she found in Paris is a delight to behold but *the* single most challenging silk that I have ever encountered. I do not recommend it for a good #sewing time. #fashion #ElfkinCouture

This insulated lunchbag has been a copy of one that I bought in Oregon a couple of years ago. The straps tore off that one, but my daughter appreciated the size and insulation. I copied the dimensions and used fabrics that I've safely stashed for a few years. The size and shape is one that I think will suit several family members. Some modifications will be made on future makes.

First time making my own bias tape. Can't say it's particularly enjoyable. It will hopefully pay off in the end. Hopefully.

My Final Fantasy X moogle doll sewing project is continuing in between job searching. First of all, thank you to the person who recommended looking at plushify.com. It helped me find the stress points on the mesh.

I have a newer, cleaner pattern. The other day my partner and I made a trip to the fabric store and I picked up some cheap fleece for the next full-scale mockup.

Today I traced the pattern pieces with seam allowance onto the fleece. Turns out my metal rune set worked great as pattern weights!

After my doctor’s appointment today, I stopped by the Leather & Sewing Supply Depot in #Toronto’s Chinatown for some continuous #zipper chain, and while I was there, I bought some #elastic for #sewing underwear. @sewing

I normally buy these online from Wawak, so I’m curious what people pay for these supplies *locally* in other cities. I paid $1.49 CAD/yard for zipper chain, 25¢ per zipper pull, $2.25/yard for black plush elastic, and $2.99/yard for the grey elastic.
