#Degrowth and fashion: How #upcycling innovators show us how to rethink and reuse waste

"We emphasize the growing interest in the story of waste material, which is reinforcing strong connections to waste and its origins. Upcycling designers highlight local and material heritage in the production of upcycled clothes, which is necessary to foster the ecological and material consciousness required for a degrowth transition. Designers we interviewed evoked the idea that 'nature doesn't waste anything', and mentioned being inspired by and mimicking nature's cycles in the design process."

I've mended my dad's thick wool socks so many times, they start to feel like the ship of Theseus.

It's got to a point where I don't think they'll be comfy anymore and I don't know what to do with them...

Thought about unravelling them and crocheting something for my relatives to put on our trees during winter 🎄

They are however over 40 years old so I'm not even sure that's possible 🧓

Anyone got any ideas?

The thing with these #sashiko pants is—I can wear them for a couple of days before a new hole develops and they end up on the to-do list again until I get around to mending them again.

I'm... I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I mend all the parts that wear out. And then I'm done. Right? Oh well, at least they get prettier with every mend.

"Join our bi-weekly Mending Workshop! This is a collaborative, regularly occurring event between the MLC Swap Shop and the #Makerspace. Bring your clothes in need of patches, adjustments, and repair! Bring any fiber projects that you’re working on to be in community while you knit, #crochet, or create! Or, just come in to hang out and learn a new skill :)

Each week we will have a new skill or theme around mending or #sustainability, often utilizing different technologies in the Makerspace. Our fibers area has 4 Singer sewing machines that will be open for use. The Makerspace will provide needles, thread, scrap fabric, and sewing tools for workshop participants.

Rechts im Bild der fingerlose Handschuh. Er sieht unregelmäßig aus, weil das verwendete Garn aus wild gemixten Resten gesponnen wurde. Die Farbe ist hellgrau-grünlich mit weißen und pinkfarbenen Stellen, kurz: die hässlichsten fingerlosen Handschuhe der Welt. Aber auch die besten, und das seit 2008.
Der Abkettrand am Daumen wurde aufgepfriemelt (Fachausdruck) und zwei weitere Reihen rückwärts gestrickt, was eine gute Idee war, weil ich so noch zwei weitere dünne Stellen beseitigen konnte.
Die Maschen liegen auf einem Bambus-Nadelspiel, das neue Garn für die Reparatur liegt als kleines Knäuel links oben im Bild.

Beide Handschuhe liegen auf schwarzem Leder-Hintergrund. beim rechten Handschuh ist der Abkettrand am Daumen bereits von zwei Jahren repariert worden mit pink-lila Garn. Der Daumenabschluss des linken Handschuhs ist gerade repariert worden und ist nun grün-türkis.

Schnell ein paar Reste verzwirnt/cablé-d :), um den Daumenabschluss meiner Lieblingsmitts zu reparieren.

Ein kleines Knäuel dünn gesponnenes graues Garn, ich vermute, es war eine Shetland-Faserprobe, liegt links oben im Bild in der Sonne auf hellem Holzboden.
Rechts daneben liegt eine Kopfspindel mit aufgewickeltem Garn. Der Faden wird von der Spindel weggezogen und teilt sich auf in zwei verschiedene Fäden. Der andere Faden ist blaugrünes Merino-Seide-Gemisch.

Das nun fertig verzwirnte und nochmal gezwirnte Garn liegt in einem kleinel Knöuel wiederum auf dem hellen Holzboden in der Sonne. Daneben liegt jetzt der fingerlose Handschuh, dessen Daumenabschluss abgenutzt ist und repariert werden muss. Ich halte die Stelle in meinen Fingern.

I finally finished a #mending job I started at least 5 years ago and put new cuffs on this hoodie. In the end it was a matter of maybe 2 hours of hand sewing if that. And it only took that long because I had to redo 1 seam and I got distracted by the Internet in between. The old cuffs had so many holes it was just sad. Also at some point I have to actually properly learn how to use my sewing machine, I bet it would have been even faster
