#P11Z

@yura @dps910 @wboss On those you could install @bunsenlabs or #TinyCoreLinux and they still have a useable system.

Sorry, but you didn't expect even a beefy PC from 1998 to be useable in 2016, so I can't fault a 2008 #Netbook for being EoL in 2026.

  • For contect: If that Netbook was a human it would be legal for it to buy itself a beer, if not liquor in Germany!
  • Seriously, do consider setting up some lightweight #Linux distro instead, cuz chances are the users of that machine only want to use it for small, lightweight tasks.
    • It'll take you like am hour or two to introduce them to it but drill down to them that #Windows7 is as much of a non-option as Tetraetyllead inbgasoline or Asbestos for oven mittens!

I mean, they don't expect to play Crysis on that thing, or are they that deranged?

@discatte @dzwiedziu looks like the pre-pre-predecessor to the #VAIO #P11Z...

When the #Vaio #P11Z is "too big" for you, but you still want #Windows because you're some #business person in #Japan:

@erin nodds in agreement

I have 21:9 (1600*768px) on a #P11Z...

@lymenzies From my own experience I can tell that even the Original #RaspberryPi and #PiZero can run #RaspberryPiOS all day long and will run circles around the orginal #EeePC701, only getting beaten by the #Vaio #P11Z when it comes to #RAM and #IO options.

  • Granted a #CM4 or #CM5 with > 2GB RAM will shift the tides but those alone cost more than a used #Wyse3040 and #upcycling a #ThinClient into something like a tiny luggable is propably more budget friendly and useful anyway, espechally since built-in Gigabit #Ethernet and #USB 3.0 really kick ass, so you'd propably be better served doing some #PoE / Wide-Range DC-in & battery setup to make good use of the oversized build volume at hand.

  • Maybe take some "THICC" 21700 LiFePO4 cells or one of those #LiFePO4 motorcycle batteries for a spin? Pretty shure that you can sqeeze battery runtime measured in DAYS out of it without much tweaking.

@lymenzies I know that an #i486SX with at least 16 MB RAM is the absolute minimum you'll need to get the 1440kB prerelease image to go brr...

As for #i386 support, #Linux yeeted that with Kernel 3.4.99 LTS & 3.6.9 respectably

@vwestlife I still think that #Netbooks are good.

Seriously, I thought the #VaioP11Z was "peak japanese productivity obsession" in terms of like "we want to make a PC small enough to fit inside a jacket pouch" - and it does that.

But the #Fujitsu #F07C blows it out of the water...

Obviously like the #P11Z this thing too needs a docking station for any #SeriousBusiness use...

@jbqueru I do agree in that we need more #FrugalComputing options.

  • If I really wanted and needed to I could do my work on an #EeePC701 or a Vaio #P11Z and I think these devices have still potential to be used.

That's why I started @OS1337:

@felyashono You don't need to make devices #thicc|er or heavier just by making them #repairable.

  • #Sony's Vaio #P11Z did have a toolfree-removeable battery yet it was less than 15mm thick and weighted ~560g with the standard battery and even <750g with an obscenely thicc aftermarket battery.

  • #Fairphone's devices are just as #thinn as any other #smartphone, yet they offer toolfree replaceable batteries!

  • #rectangular / #prismatic cells exist. Just because you rarely see them compared to 14500/18650/21700 cylinders but that doesn't mean they ain't available.

  • if #Framework didn't decide to go with a *"pan"-style design, they could've made their flat #battery toolfree-swappable just as the Aforementioned VAIO.

There are other ways to make a device thinner and lighter, ranging from Magnesium to fiber reinforced plastic to carbon fiber. Some #ThinkPad|s did all 3.

  • Not to mention sticking batteries in makes replacements unnecessary dangerous and can yield users to not replace "#DangerPillow|s" until they crack the housong or most likely the screen.

Also most of the gains in terms of battery runtime are attributeabke to better battery chemistry, higher grade cells by modern standards and lower power consumption by smaller process nodes (65nm @ 1,5V -> 7nm @ 0,85V can basically reduce power by 90% without any tricks!) and more powerful chips that more dynamically switch to low power states transparently. (Which is why you often get 4 different TDP ratings on some chips, with nominal, maximum & minimum configureable maximums and typical @ nominal settings)…

#AntiRepairDesign is a choice by the manufacturer. #IP68, #ATEX & #MILSTD810 can be achieved without glueing shit together!

It's really sad that some machines on the market are worse options than a #Vaio #P11Z used...

Kevin Karhan :verified:kkarhan@infosec.space
2025-02-28

@radmin @tera @critakitty yeah, @frameworkcomputer refusing to make a #TrackPoint keyboard is kinda sad.

  • Cuz it's not as if they can't make a call at #Sprintek and maybe even get a custom-coloured rubber cap just to avoid #Lenovo claiming they violate the #UltraNav design / trademark.

Not to mention this isn't unique to even #ThinkPad or #hp #ProBook or #Dell #Latitude & #Getac devices, but even #Sony (#Vaio #P11Z) and #GPD did so...

  • I hope they at least got a holder-hole and lanyard loop option for the #Stylus like the #X230Tablet has...

@kobilacroix define "outdated"?

points at #Vaio #P11Z

Kevin Karhan :verified:kkarhan@infosec.space
2024-12-11

@ustralien Sadly no, and that's my big disappointment!

@frameworkcomputer decided to choose the #Apple-esque "flat cells below #trackpad" design in the unreasonable #THINN-ness race instead of doing what even the #EeePC and #Sony's #Vaio #P11Z did and have a slot at the back to chug in batteries!

  • I know why they did it, as a closed aluminium pan aka. "#lunchbox" design is easier to fabricate, but I'd rather some #ToolfreeSwappableBattery which are IMHO of more practicality than having the ability to swap out every port.

Not that I don't like those #modules, but I'd rather wish for a "#THICC-er" device if that gets me essentials like #Ethernet, #USB-A & -C as well as a #TRRS #HeadphoneJack / #HeadsetJack.

That being said the #Framework is still by a long margin the "least #enshittified" device on the market, and same goes for the #Fairphone devices...

Not to mention they don't have an #UltraNav-Style #Trackpoint and I do use that instead of a Trackpad.

@topher if you like #SGI #IRIX, then maybe @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabs woth it's #OpenBox desktop is right up your alley?

Kevin Karhan :verified:kkarhan@infosec.space

@OpenComputeDesign same with many other things.

Personally I'm so pissed off amidst the ongoing #Enshittification that I really need to get the #NUCbook off the ground before my #X230tablet dies.

@topher @nekohayo +1 thanks...

I think it's important to #reuse, #repair & #upcycle not only when money is tight, but as a matter of principle.

  • Every production is a toll on the planet and ecosystem and thus we should not only choose #RepairableTech but also keep stuff up and running or at least salvage tech...

Again: I started @OS1337 as an exercise in #minimalism as my #P11Z is getting too slow for @bunsenlabs / #BunsenlabsLinux.

  • Abeit the current target is a #1440kB version that allows one to #SSH into things and work that way...
