Upgrading An Old Macbook With an Old Processor

Unfortunately, the first Core Duo chips were limited to 32-bit at a time when the industry was shifting toward 64-bit. The Core 2 Duo eventually filled this gap, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bEsigp_oG4" target="_blank">[dosdude1] recently completed an upgrade to a Macbook Pro</a> that he had always wanted to do by replacing the Core Duo processor it had originally with a Core 2 Duo from a dead motherboard.</p>
<p>The upgrade does require a bit more tooling than many of us may have access too, but the process isn’t completely out of reach, and centers around desoldering the donor processor and making sure the new motherboard gets heated appropriately when removing the old chip and installing the new one. These motherboards had an issue of moisture ingress which adds a pre-heating step that had been the cause of [dosdude1]’s failures in previous attempts. But with the new chip cleaned up, prepared with solder balls, and placed on the new motherboard it was ready to solder into its new home.</p>

This has also led me to using the #MacBook again. (When you need a cursor, you need a cursor.) I forgot how sharp the edges of the M3 MacBook Air are; it's actually pretty damn painful!
It's funny how different the first-boot process for OpenBSD and macOS is. On OpenBSD I did a bunch of performance tweaks (mainly joining the staff group and adjusting values in sysctl.conf) then added the packages I wanted and went about my way, with the exception of that touchpad problem, of course. On macOS I went through a guided setup that did its damnedest to push me towards certain settings with iCloud, Apple Intelligence, etc. and then I cast about for ways to remove and replace various software.
On that subject: I'm finding Ghostty to be just fine, the browsers are all the same, and Rift (https://github.com/acsandmann/rift) gives me a more reliable tiling experience than any of the other solutions I've tried on macOS. Right now the only hang-ups involve remapping Caps Lock to Command. That almost allows me to emulate the ctrl:nocaps I set on other platforms, but if I need to C-c something in the terminal, I have to find the damn Control key itself. Probably I'll experiment with Karabiner or Kanata to come up with a sensible modifier layout.
Anyway. I'm coming off a long sickness that ran through my entire family, so I'm bloviating. Onward.

I'm at a crossroads when it comes to my #computers upgrade cycles. My 2020 M1 #MacBook Pro is still good just as the day I bought it, but its 6 years old and with #Apple further embracing #AI as a tool for driving sales and subscriptions, it won't be long before the company drops support for 1st generation silicon. My #Windows11 laptop is also an #Intel 10th generation; on device AI is non-existent, which means Feature Updates might end support in a few years.
You know what's crazy to me? I paid tons of money for a 16" M4 Max 48GB #macbook pro, because its processing power is about 2x compared to my #Framework 16's ryzen ai 9 hx 370 .. and yet, the user experience of #macos is noticeably slower compared to my @fedora @kde. A lot slower. The animations take forever when opening/closing apps, and it being Apple, you of course can't change any of that.
2x faster machine on paper, 2x slower machine in day to day use. Make it make sense.

Has anyone successfully installed Sequoia on a #MacBook that came with 26 pre-installed?
I upgraded to 26 for a hot minute and then immediately reinstalled sequoia but I wonder if that's an option if it's not what your Mac originally came with.
If that's hard or impossible, I will probably stick it out with my M1 for a while longer.
