ok fedi, I have a dell micro sff pc (an optiplex 7050), the kind that only fits an nvme and a 2.5" hd inside. I have a 10 TB 3.5" hd I'm trying to use, got a longer sata+power cable to let it sit outside the case, and it won't respond when plugged in. A 2.5" drive I have laying around works fine on either of the extender cables I have. It does not see the large drive in the BIOS or in the OS (dietpi).

I suspected the 3.3v issue with newer SATA specs and covered pins 1-3 with non conductive tape, this didn't make any difference. The large drive is a Toshiba NAS N300 that worked fine in a set up with an SBC. The little dinky one is WD Blue (5400 RPM, 500GB).

Any ideas? I guess my backup option is to throw it in an external enclosure and use it over USB but I would prefer to get it working on SATA if possible.

For those folks looking for programmable #sensors or #controllers or other devices that are easily customized, I recommend Phidgets. A 🇨🇦 company, based in #Calgary, #Alberta, that has been around for about 20 years.

I have used it for sensor projects (heat and humidity) and a fun #RFID project.

Huge library of projects available in a lot of languages (C, C#, Python, Java, and more).

Lots of online support. Most devices are backwards compatible, but there have been new standards (e.g. RFID) which require reader up grades. Well made, inexpenaive.

Since the publication of Feynman's "simulation" paper in 1982, researchers in physics, EE, CS, and maths had been trying to build practical #quantum #computers (QC). They had come a long way, over the past four decades. In recent years, random circuit sampling, boson sampling, and several other experiments have demonstrated QC’s supremacy over classical digital computers (DC).

But neither the QC theory nor the technology is practicable, at present. Sure, the Toffoli CCNOT reversible, unitary gate is equivalent to the DC universal NAND gate, so QC can theoretically simulate any DC, including probabilistic ones. But "can" is not "do". The best known hardest quantum algorithm, Shore's 1994 prime factoring, solves an NP problem of DC. In 2026, a QC factored 551. Incidentally, ChatGPT factored it in milliseconds. (OK, cheap shot.) And, to date, there is no known efficient quantum algorithm for an NP-complete problem. The general consensus is that QC is just as much subject to that "gut-feel” speed-limit of DC: \(P \neq NP\).

Forty years is an eternity in computing: compare a cheap 2025 gaming laptop to the top-end 1985 SGI IRIS 2000 3D graphics workstation; compare the 1985 CRAY-2 supercomputer to von Neumann’s 1945 paper on a bus-based computer architecture. Goodness me, is DC actually "faster" than QC? Still, QC has proven, demonstrated supremacy over DC, in some narrow, but significant, areas of computing; QC should be studied.

At present, though, #profiteering quantum startups are trading a few buzzwords for a mound of cash, using #WallStreet's proprietary, alchemical process for creating the element \(Au\): heat an admixture of #QC and #AI buzzwords over the hot coals of social media—voilà!

I'm thinking of getting a Quest 3 to mix up the focal distance I look at all day. Any good reason I shouldn't?

Suppose you want to give a child a computer that is 100% #offline, no Internet at all. What is the ideal "baby's first computer"? What is the most empowering platform for them to learn about #computers and #programming?

A standard modern Linux machine that simply has no Internet? (what distro still works well offline?) A #retrocomputing relic? Some weird hardware specifically designed for #children, like the dear departed One Laptop Per Child?

I especially want to keep my child away from LLMs.

đź“– The Story

2019 brought new professional and academic challenges. While preparing for my thesis, one lecture stopped me cold - . The theory was tough, abstract, and fascinating.

So I did what devs do best: I built a simulator to understand it.

It astonished me that there exist no 32 or 32 inch curved OLED 2560x1440 ("2.5K") displays being manufactured -- at all.

All of that size and curvature are 4K in resolution.

I don't want to use 4K (or pay for such a display); it's 2.25x as many pixels and it's not nearly worth the huge extra load on the GPU, in my opinion -- and I have an RTX 5080.

Hopefully one will eventually emerge, but we will probably be seeing 8K versions of the aforementioned first. 🙄

Dear Friends of tiny monitors,

My first monitor was a second-hand Reuters green screen. The screen went after a few years and a friend ordered and installed a new (CRT) Cathode Ray Tube. Kind.
Then came an amber monochrome for my first 386SX to run DOS, Gem and eventually MS Windows version 1. Then all of a sudden I had to have colour. No more monochrome options available except second hand. Que?

Jim-enemy Cricket!

Did not need colour as my printer was monochrome inkjet. Much better than colour dot matrix of the time.

So at the moment I am using a 17" AOC (no not Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) Nope good quality for its time colour monitor. It'll do for me to type in words. My original use of computers.

Quite interesting to go through ones computer history... :cyber_hacking: :0dd_verified: :tux:
