SpaceX poinformowało, że utraciło kontrolę nad jednym z satelitów Starlink (nr 35956), który po awarii zaczął spadać w kierunku Ziemi. Objawy – nagła utrata komunikacji, spadek wysokości oraz pojawienie się wielu obiektów wokół satelity – wskazuja na eksplozję. Firma zapewnia, że satelita spali się w atmosferze w ciągu kilku tygodni i nie stanowi zagrożenia dla ISS. Według LeoLabs (firmy, która śledzi poczynania użytkowników kosmosu) przyczyną była wewnętrzna awaria, a nie kolizja. Zdarzenie miało miejsce na wysokości 418 km, w coraz bardziej zatłoconej niskiej orbicie okołoziemskiej, gdzie obecnie śledzi się ponad 24 tys. obiektów. Do końca dekady liczba satelitów w tym rejonie może sięgnąć 70 tys., co zwiększa ryzyko kolizji i utrudnia pracę astronomów.
