The period of checking daily, multiple times, if anything has finally sprouted, has begun ☺️ Only tomatoes, peppers , leeks and experimentally onions (plus hokkaido pumpkins on another windowsill) so far, will add more later.
@MaQuest So, my computer isn't happy about the website you posted. However, to summarize, these are some veggies and herbs that the article recommends to start early (before March in the Northern Hemisphere)... I would also add hemp to the list!
- Peppers
- Eggplant
- Tomatoes
- Onions and Leeks (from seed)
- Celery
- Celeriac (Celery Root)
- Broccoli (early)
- Cauliflower
- Cabbage
- Head Lettuce (not leaf lettuce)
- Spinach (early)
- Parsley
- Sage
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Oregano
- Lavender
Here are some different recipes for #PeatFree #PottingSoil blends -- depending on what one needs it for (#SeedStarting, #RaisedBeds, #PottedPlants, etc). The recipes also call for the use of #mycorrhizae to simulate root production. My cannabis farmer friends use that in their soil blends!
How to Make Peat-Free #PottingMix
Easy #DIY Potting Mixes for Potted Plants and Mo
"Going peat-free is one of the most impactful things we can do as gardeners to be better stewards of the earth and our resources. The lack of peat-free potting mixes at the garden center can be discouraging, but I see it as an opportunity to make my own which, frankly, has yielded far better results over the last few years. With a few basic components kept at hand, you can make great mixes for your plants, too!"

DIY #PottingMix Masterclass: Make Your Own #PeatFree Blends For Plants
Looking to make more of natural potting mix ingredients and boost your peat-free options? Our DIY potting mix masterclass can help you create potting mediums for different plants
By Mary Ellen Ellis
published September 9, 2024
"While it’s easy to find high-quality potting mix at gardening stores and nurseries, there are good reasons to consider #DIY #PottingMix. Making your own blend gives you greater control and allows you to make adjustments for different needs. You can also save money this way.
"As you investigate recipes for the perfect potting mix, consider the importance of leaving out peat. Peat moss is often used in potting blends but unfortunately it must be harvested from wetlands. The process damages a delicate ecosystem and releases carbon dioxide. Luckily, if you want to make soilless growing mediums, there are plenty of good alternatives. Here we show you how to make your own potting mix."

I hadn't considered using #RiceHulls in a #PottingSoil mix. But I am definitely going to incorporate that into a #PeatFree mix, along with #CoconutCoir, #Perlite or #Vermiculite, and aged #Compost!

#MOFGA - #Maine #Seed Planting Calendar
Updated December 9, 2022
"If you’re new to growing vegetables or just need a refresher, here’s a basic vegetable planting calendar to get you started. We’ve also included a few herbs that are often grown similarly to vegetables. The dates are approximate — and based on USDA Plant Hardiness zone 5 — and will vary depending on your location, the weather, and the time you have available. Keeping your own planting records, with notes on how these seeding dates worked (or didn’t work) for you, will help you develop a planting calendar that is specific to your site and growing habits."

Since I am done with seed starting for the moment, I decided to use up the leftover prepared soil to repot some houseplants. The Jade plant lost a few leaves in the process, so we'll see if I can start new ones!

#StartingSeeds at Home with #UMaineExtension
Mar 3, 2021
"You can get a big jump on #Maine’s short #gardening season when you grow your own #seedlings. Instead of waiting for the ground to warm up enough to sow seeds outside, start enjoying flowers and harvesting vegetables four to six weeks earlier by starting seeds at home.
Starting your own plants from seed also allows you to choose from the much broader array of varieties offered in seed catalogs.
Using transplants instead of direct-seeding is especially important for plants that take a longer time to mature or are sensitive to frost."

Alrighty then... We know there's shit going down. But for the next 24 hours, I'll be focused on #SolarPunkSunday (unless there is breaking news that can't wait).
Let's get SPS started!!!
#SolarPunk #RightToRepair #RepairCafes #SeedStarting #Agroecology #BuildingCommunity #Rewilding #VisibleMending #FiberArts #FoodWaste #Earth4All #ABetterWorld #ResistanceIsFertile
Despite all the bad news, I have been gathering posts and articles for #SolarPunkSunday. Topics will include #SeedStarting, #ContainerGardening, #Agroecology, #RepairCafes, #Rewilding, #VisibleMending, #FiberArts, and utilizing #FoodWaste in recipes (which could come in handy if times are tough). We need to #BuildCommunity and come together to #Fight4OurExistence and #MotherEarth and #TheFutureWeWant!
#Earth4All #ABetterWorld #SolarPunk #CommunityGardens #BuildingCommunity #ResistanceIsFertile
Alrighty then. Thanks to everyone who participated in this week's #SolarPunkSunday, especially, @BrambleBearWhuffling and @MaQuest ! We'll be talking about #SeedStarting and #GardenPlanning soon, and for those in the #SouthernHemisphere, late summer gardening! And, of course, #RepairCafes, #VisibleMending, #DIY, and other related topics!
An inspirational post, @BrambleBearGrrrauwling ! I've been thinking the same thing (as some of my little potatoes have started sprouting). It's almost Imbolc -- which means, #SeedStarting!
An early #SolarPunkSunday post, since this event is Saturday!
