Went out to the community garden to start prepping my beds for spring planting, and found my row of carrots from last summer survived the winter intact! I figured they would be rotten and full of bugs but they're not, so I brought them in and scrubbed them up. Got a few funny shaped ones, never seen a wasp-waisted carrot before.

Compost: Growing Soil 🪱
Creating a good “living soil” is best achieved with the regular addition of composted organic material to the soil. Making your own compost therefore becomes an essential part of good gardening practice…

@LifeTimeCooking There are many varieties of garlic. Thank you to Armenia, Georgia, Krasnador, Persia, and more. #Armenia, #nodig, #growyourown, #garlic.
@MaQuest So, my computer isn't happy about the website you posted. However, to summarize, these are some veggies and herbs that the article recommends to start early (before March in the Northern Hemisphere)... I would also add hemp to the list!
- Peppers
- Eggplant
- Tomatoes
- Onions and Leeks (from seed)
- Celery
- Celeriac (Celery Root)
- Broccoli (early)
- Cauliflower
- Cabbage
- Head Lettuce (not leaf lettuce)
- Spinach (early)
- Parsley
- Sage
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Oregano
- Lavender

The January sown broad (fava) beans are coming along in their own time. #GrowYourOwn #HomeGrown #Gardening
Just bought some seeds from Humboldt seed company. This is the first time I'm making a purchase with them so we'll see how it goes! Really excited to grow this year :] #cannabis #growyourown #outdoorgrow #containergrowing #grownfromseed #growHSC @HumboldtSeedCo
Starting chilli peppers 🌶️
Mid February to mid March is the time to get started with these slow growing plants so when the summer comes the plants are ready to sit outdoors.
@mk30 The 2026 vanilla bean harvest is lovely. Your local gardening exchanges must be crowded with vanilla bean enthusiasts. #growyourown
Nice day out at RHS Bridgewater for a grafting workshop
We even did a couple of trees to bring home. I chose Bee Bench and Milicent Barnes as the varieties. I'd never come across either.
T'other half chose Ashmeads Kernal and Duke of Devonshire

https://flightplot.wordpress.com/2026/02/05/looking-round-3/
Potted on some cabbage starts that overwintered under my #GrowLights. Just curious to see if they grow or if they just bolt in the end. 🤔 Is EXPERIMENT.
I also washed/sanitized seed trays and sowed two different kinds of beets, which take a while to germinate and are destined for the #lowtunnel.
I cant wait for #spring - I'm betting it will be early! 😅
About half my chillies have germinated already - some time in the last 36 hours anyway. Chamomile soaked from 25th Jan, planted in pairs in mini pots on 28th Jan and popped into the #HotFridge, germinated circa 3rd/4th Feb.
If there is a race to be won here I guess the prize goes to the Chilli Chump "Kimchi Pepper" seeds — all 4 seeds strongly germinated!
Currently our no-shows are Chilli Chump Naga Morich, and also both Rocoto varieties (Marlene and Costa Rica, also both Chilli Chump, from last year.)
On the superhot germination front we have have a single Naga Morich from Fatalii and a single 7 Pot Brainstrain Yellow from Chilli Chump. That's pretty speedy for superhots really.
Freeze update: Tomatoes and most of the zinnias look very bad. Some of the chickpea plants, too. Interestingly, the ones planted close together survived. Tomorrow I might have more time to investigate. Lettuce and carrots are very happy. #GrowYourOwn #Cold #Zone10B
February: Strange gardening weather 🌦️
February and March are not really good gardening months. In the old days there would be a slow transition from proper winter weather (snow) into cold dry days before spring.
