#Bcachefs

@phantasus @batadv and don't forget to pay your yearly Whiskey tax! Otherwise, you know... #bcachefs... (just kidding)

More seriously, I'm not quite convinced that would work. Upstreaming actually has some hierarchy, you'd first need to bribe @gregkh to get into staging. Then you'll need to bribe your sub system maintainer(s). And then Linus.
And you'd have to somehow do that without other people asking questions why your new code was merged without any proper reviewing/feedback from others.

@tootbrute ah, thanks for link!

I'm not doing bcachefs on root either, but in theory shouldn't be too hard - nixos should build and install the bcachefs module in your initrd if it knows your rootfs type. Hopefully it also copies the userspace stuff in as well :) Might be worth experimenting in a VM?

There's a few nixos people normally in the #bcache (_not_ #bcachefs) IRC channel on oftc who might be able to help (I guess nixos specifics sort of borderline off-topic there, but probably OK.)

just looking at the bcachefs wiki page. hmm...wonder how to work this. looks like good lunar new year project. for now just putting nixos on this extra machine with default settings...

gotta a find an idiots guide to #bcachefs to mess around with this.

@killab33z i am using #ZFS as well after having used #ext4 and sometimes #btrfs or #XFS for a long time. I think #bcachefs is very interesting as well.
What to choose depends on your use case

@AliveDevil there is also #bcachefs which I will probably soon move to.

@khleedril

Filesystem + #LVM + #LUKS is such a crazy complexity. From the perspective of someone who needed to backup and restore such a partition.

#BTRFS + LUKS is way easier and very stable. Linux broke everywhere for me in the past, but never BTRFS (when using the longterm kernel, there were some broken drivers in the "stable" kernel a short while ago)

Filesystem-based encryption (RIP #bcachefs) would reduce this even more. But luckily my NixOS with bcachefs install didnt boot back then, otherwise I would have needed to reinstall.
