#BTRFS

Building on the BTRFS rootfs encryption, the latest version of github.com/gitbls/sdm provides a mechanism for easily and quicky encrypting both the rootfs AND a data partition...ext4 and #btrfs

Fediquestion:

Can anyone explain/point me at documentation that explains what exactly btrfs means with its "allocated" and "unallocated" metrics in ``btrfs filesystem show?

All I can find is "running a balance fixedthis for me", but no explanation of why it does that or what unallocated actually means, the explanation in the manpage isn't very helpful to me.

In my case I have a btrfs on top of a single lvm volume with no btrfs-raid features enabled.

I had planned to upgrade to Debian 13 “Trixie” this winter, but had wanted to get a lot of improvements done first. Like moving to ZFS.

How an ethernet port forced a premature update.

#btrfs - scales to..... MIRROING! raid5/6 is broken!

Has massive fragmentation problems.

But YOU CAN RESIZE POOLS and ADD DISKS!

Piss poor documentation, worse resiliency.

#ZFS - scales to.... welp, raidz3 wasn't good enough, so we invented d-raid.

Deals with fragmentation issues easily, is insanely easy to backup.

Exceedingly well documented. Can handle /dev/urandom being written directly to block devices; will recover.

BUT THE LICENSE IS SOOOOOO BAD! LINUX GUD! NIHS!

All hail #btrfs in combination with grub-btrfs.

While the package manager's ability to enforce consistent versions across devices is appealing, I'm struggling to see the distinct advantages of itself. Given that and already offer similar capabilities, it seems like a redundant effort. I can achieve comparable results on any Linux distribution by using the standalone home-manager tool.

I wanted to automatically make boot options for snapper snapshots and ended up making these

https://codeberg.org/grafcube/uki-efi-boot
https://codeberg.org/grafcube/uki-snapper

uki-efi-boot automatically scans directories in your esp for efi executables and adds entries to your UEFI boot options while uki-snapper automatically creates boot entries/UKIs for snapper snapshots.

It has been working flawlessly so far. I use secure boot so I have to configure uki-snapper to build new images for each snapshot so I configured it to generate no more than 2 to fit in my esp. It also only works on arch right now since it depends on mkinitcpio but contributions to expand support are very welcome.

I hope someone finds these scripts useful

They're available on the AUR as well.

Lesson in #Kubernetes today - if you've got a bunch of users with some common very large container images, the default overlay might eat up your rootfs on your worker nodes, but #btrfs can be a significantly more quicker and efficient alternative.

Es gibt also keine zwei Begrifflichkeiten dafür.

@Rainer "friendica" Sokoll Ja, mit #btrfs geht das genauso.

I have developed and released a tool for graphically managing #Btrfs / #Snapper snapshots.
This is a #Qt 6/ #QML graphical tool utilizing D-Bus and PolicyKit.
