I may be late to the party, anyway I have to say: #TrueNAS scale is quite nice. It's UI is polished and all the relevant stuff is there and integrated nicely.
I wish every appliance had such a nice web UI.

I'm looking at solutions for making it easy to do large media file transfers (for #musicking, not 🏴‍☠️, silly).

It's tempting to set up an FTP server because nostalgia or just set up shell accounts for the people who need to be involved, but that's a bit technical for some of my collaborators.

I have a #TrueNAS box on the LAN with adequate storage. Only public-accessible services currently are gaming servers in containers.

How do we feel about #NextCloud? What should I be considering?

Just kidding. I just checked the power usage of my #TrueNAS server and it's average is now above 100watts with the addition of PiHole.

The literal embodiment of freedom (from ads) is not free.

Copying my music to USB stick takes a very looong time.

Copying it a folder on my #TrueNAS server takes a lot less time.
(Though the completion estimates are out of their minds.)

Whats your approach for VMs (in #Proxmox or any other hypervisor) with large (1-2TB) Storage needs?

Currently I have an virtual #TrueNAS (with hardware pass-thru) which provides NFS/SMB Mounts for the other VMs. But this is not always possible depending on the hardware.

And creating large vDisks feels wrong.

Does #TrueNAS have a file sync app like #Synology Drive? I see the #NextCloud has one but looks like they're just never going to get it working on Android. And the #QNAP one only supports Ubuntu.

I don't want to stick with Synology with all the recent fuckery, but it seems like nothing else has file sync done as well as they do.

I worry how much power my #TrueNAS server draws. (Dell #T430 ) I get a 115w peak every week or so, then averaging around 84 watts.

Sheesh, is that too much?

Then I look at the max of 1700watts and figure I could be doing much worse.

(Are there more efficient boxes? yes. Are their easier ones to setup? No.)
