I spent this evening trying to get my physical retro PC, a Pentium 166MHz running Windows 98 SE, to connect to an 80GB IDE harddisk. The BIOS seems to be limited to a maximum of 8GB, but in the end I managed to get it working. I needed to use Ontrack's Disk Manager 2000 to install a DDO driver.
I guess I became too lazy! Emulating old hardware is so much more convenient than dealing with real-world limitations like this. 😅
Finally decided to set up my NEC PowerMate VP75 on my desk. I originally was running #MSDOS 7.1 on it but I decided to upgrade it to #Win98SE for convenience sake.
If you're into late 90s/early 2000s #laptops, I highly recommend picking these up. A CompactFlash to PCMCIA adapter, and an SD to CF adapter. Paired with an SD card, this works great as an option for a secondary drive on old laptops. I use a 128GB card for games and programs on #Win98SE on my Thinkpad T42

Today, I upgraded my PC emulation setup to 86Box 4.1 and I also installed the new BIOS ROM set. Version 4.1 came with a long changelog and a lot of bugs were fixed.
I just played a few games and ran some sound and graphics tests. Everything seems to work just fine... Windows 3.11, as well as Windows 98 SE. I can only say "Thank you".

Microsoft 3D-Pinball for Windows 95. Took me a bit to remember where this one came from, as it wasn't part of a regular Windows 95 CD. No, this was from the Plus! add-on package! Oh, this was so long ago...
Finding, installing, testing and sorting of all that Windows 9x stuff takes a lot longer than I had first anticipated.
I used to be so good at this, but so many of my oldschool web sources have gone dark over the years. Sad. Also, not every tool I once used still makes sense or even works inside an emulator. But, I'm slowly working through it all...
When it comes to image editing, I am extremely lazy. When something works for me, I will be using it until it breaks. Looking back, as the years went by, I did only have to go through a handful of different programs.
From 1998 to 2007, I was a using Paint Shop Pro and I loved it! Versions 5 to 9 were awesome, but everything went to shit when Jasc was sold to Corel back in 2004. But I am still having very fond memories remembering these golden years.
So, I just tested a few more games within my virtual 86Box and Windows 98 SE:
Microsoft's Fury 3 and Monster Truck Madness are working great! I guess, this should be expected, as they're from the earlier Windows 95 era, but SimCity 3000 from 1999 also runs really smoothly.
