Wir arbeiten z.Zt. mit Lenovo-ThinkCentre. Ist ganz gut, aber auch gebraucht sehr teuer.

Plus #nvme-#Umbausatz !! Wir sind sehr knapp bei Kasse und müssen manches zurückstellen, was wir eigentlich gern umgesetzt hätten.

So people, if you want to launch new federated website, there is some idea.

- Ads filtering list.
- Linux package build (for generating binary)
- Bios Database
- Secureboot shim
- Search engine.

Those 5 idea would allow to agregate data / build power from all over the world, allowing to a fully decentralised, and impossible to down system, as blocking node would not disable the system.

Yesterday was quite the day! My replacement #Dell battery arrived. Opened the #laptop, swapped the battery, powered it on. It booted up but failed to recognize my SSD and thus I couldn't boot into the OS. Strange.

#BIOS showed there wasn't a battery connected. Also strange. As per Dell's documentation, I needed to completely clear the power. Did that.

Still no disk recognized. BIOS still showed I can only boot from the NIC. Great. I found the BIOS version was severely out of date by 5-6 years. Downloaded the new firmware and flashed it successfully. The laptop *still* doesn't recognize the SSD....but does recognize I have a new battery. I guess that's an improvement.

Interestingly, while using the BIOS flash tool, the laptop can see part of the SSD as I was able to see part of Debian's /boot partition.

Never in my life did I ever expect replacing a laptop battery would cause me this much pain.

You've know for a long time that a human is

- #hardware (your body)
- #sotfware (your mind / soul)

The basic functions (eat, sleep, reproduce, etc.) are in the #BIOS.
The rest (what you like, etc.) is what we call the #userland.

Here's the thing.

YOU are the software engineer. Userland is yours. You do it everyday. Just know it. Master it. Program yourself to do what YOU want to do, not what the telly says.

Oh, and you *can* actually program / hack your BIOS but it's a **very** bad idea.

Процедура обновления любого ПО для меня всегда была загадкой. Ты нажимаешь кнопку «Обновить», и за кулисами начинает происходить какое-то таинство с кучей индикаторов и диагностических сообщений на экране монитора. Что уж говорить про системное ПО, такое как BIOS, затрагивающее самую суть — компьютерное железо… Мне, как исследователю из команды Raccoon Security, всегда хотелось узнать, как изнутри обновляется BIOS с учётом всех защит, которые её окружают. Разбираться будем вместе, а для примера возьмём самую распространённую UEFI BIOS H2O фирмы Insyde Software и её сервисную утилиту для обновления BIOS — H2OFFT.

So... it is now possible to flash an AMD Radeon 9070 card with the 9070XT card bios and unlock 30-40% more performance. Do this on a card with triple fans. Saw a significant performance boost on my Gigabyte 9070 non-XT, including on compute. Power limit raised from 240W to 350W. Temperature difference is about 10C on my card.

Okay, so if you own a FW13 AMD first gen (Ryzen 7040), you probably don't want to upgrade to the latest BIOS (3.18) as it seems to break booting up when connected to a USB or Thunderbolt docking station.

Interesting problem that’s just emerged with my home desktop (NUC form factor) mini PC. Occasionally it gets #stuck with the #BIOS “American Megatrends” screen on it and doesn’t load #GRUB. It’s only happened a few times so far, and I’ve just switched it off and on again and all is well. Anyone else seen this behaviour? My first idea (when I get to it) will be to take the top off and see if the SATA SSD with GRUB and Ubuntu on it is connected properly.

Ältere 386/486 Mainboards bis 1994 erkennen im BIOS zwar vermeintlich mehr als 504 MB, aber letztendlich lässt sich eine Festplatte unter MS-DOS oder Windows 95/98 trotzdem nur mit maximal 504 MB ansprechen und partitionieren.

Как-то при разработке UEFI мне посчастливилось разбираться с таблицами описания системы в исходниках ASL (ACPI Source Language). Тема оказалась не тривиальная и моего багажа в несколько лет опыта, достаточно плотной embedded-разработки, не хватало для полного понимания работы подсистемы ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface). Поэтому пришлось исследовать доступные материалы на тему. В процессе поиска информации заметил, что очень мало русскоязычных статей на эту тему – а если и есть, то они в основном рассказывают о том, как включить какое-то оборудование на раннем этапе загрузки системы, а не дают понимания, как это устроено. Поэтому решил попробовать написать об устройстве ACPI, тем более что тема достаточно сложная для понимания – одна лишь спецификация ACPI занимает более 1200 страниц (на момент написания статьи). А некоторые даже и не знают о её существовании.
