Evening Fox

There's a golf course in the Bay Area where it's really easy to photograph Red Foxes. They're very approachable because a community member feeds them. Trays of chicken parts distributed to the foxes on a regular basis. Apparently she thinks the foxes are vermin, and feeds them to keep them from eating the food she leaves out for a feral cat colony. Taking photos of people taking photos of a red fox on the sea ice the other day. I think the fox might well be the same individual I photographed a month ago. It has certainly figured out that fishers might leave some of their catch on the ice.

A few more photos I hadn't shared yet from my visit to National Park de Hoge Veluwe with a birding buddy. Tawny owl and the were the definite highlights beside the very detailed shots we took at the hide. 🪶🦊

Tawny owl (Strix aluco) peeking out of its hole with what looks like a grumpy morning face. This specific owl has lived in this tree for at least a few years now and is a well known celebrity among birders that visit the Hoge Veluwe park. Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) taken from the birding hide, lovely pose with a soft background.Blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) with a clear reflection in the small pool that sat in the middle of the view from the birding hide. Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) looking out in a heather field, beautifully lit by the afternoon sun.

A red fox against a snowy, forested backdrop. It's fully in the sun, making its coat extra vibrant, especially around its head and neck. Its head is facing mostly toward the right, giving the viewer a nice profile shot of its face. You'll notice the back left leg is deformed. We're not sure why; our best guess is an old injury from a trap. (Aside from walking with the usual 3-footed limp, it was not visibly impacted by the injury. In fact, it ran off without any thought at all.) This one was leading the other, suggesting perhaps it's the male of the pair, or potentially an older sibling.A red fox against a snowy, forested landscape. Its standing profile, but its head is facing the camera. I've zoomed in to show its perfect face more clearly. It's mostly in the shade, making the colors appear duller than the other one (it was the same color in the sun). Its coat is gorgeous, fading more to a darker red/black toward the back and legs. Unlike the other one, this one does not have any previously-injured legs. It was following the other, suggesting that this one was the female, or a younger sibling.

Ein junger Rotfuchs (Vulpes vulpes) steht frontal im Bild zwischen trockenem Gras und Zweigen. Das rotbraune Fell ist sauber ausgeprägt, mit heller Brust und dunkleren Beinen. Die großen, aufgerichteten Ohren und die bernsteinfarbenen Augen sind scharf fokussiert. Der Hintergrund ist natürlich und leicht unscharf, ohne menschliche Elemente.
