Een kleine zangvogel op een houten voederplank.
De vogel heeft een warm bruine borst en buik, een grijsbruin hoofd en een korte puntige snavel.
Op de vleugels zitten opvallende lichte, bijna geelwitte strepen en donkere veren, en de staart is slank en naar achteren gestrekt.
De voederplank is gemaakt van verweerd, groengrijs hout en ligt vol met kleine zaadjes en kruimels.

Tawny owl (Strix aluco) peeking out of its hole with what looks like a grumpy morning face. This specific owl has lived in this tree for at least a few years now and is a well known celebrity among birders that visit the Hoge Veluwe park.

On the last day of snow, just before the thaw quietly set in, winter paused for a moment at our garden fence.

Perched there was a Eurasian chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), known in Dutch as the vink. Alert, upright, and clearly assessing the situation, it seemed to be weighing its chances. The bird feeder was busy — mostly house sparrows, with a few blue tits and great tits darting in and out. Below them, pigeons, blackbirds, magpies and crows scavenged the ground for what inevitably falls. An efficient little ecosystem, even on a grey winter morning.

From the warmth of the house, I watched it all unfold. Outside, the world was cold and muted; inside, quiet and still. The chaffinch waited. This species is known for its adaptability, especially in winter, when flexible feeding strategies and patience can make all the difference. Rather than forcing its way in, it observed — conserving energy, reading movement, timing its next move.

The light was flat and overcast, typical for this time of year. With snow still present and clouds acting like a giant softbox, contrast was low. To keep detail in both feathers and background, I shot handheld with my Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100–400mm at f/11, 1/250 sec, ISO 12800. Not ideal conditions — but honest ones. Winter photography is often about working with what little light you’re given.

There was no drama here. Just calm abundance. Even at the edge of thaw, winter was still quietly doing its work.

Als ik opsta om te kijken is de vogel ... 😂

m.i. zat zo een vanmiddag even op 't mandje > ging naar de grond, omhoog kijkend, dik luchtig verenpak [oud of ziek?]
Vooral de rozerode borst-keel viel op, ik zag niet de dikke vinkenbek
Zie echter geen andere vogel in de gids die lijkt op wat ik zag

A bird from above. The chaffinch sits on top of two deck boards. You can see the grey head with black at the beak quite well, with copper red cheeks and breast. The black and white tail and wing feathers frame the brown back well.

I hope you do not start sneezing from looking at this picture. As this bird sits in pollen heaven.

I have exchanged the Canon R100 for an R10 because I kept getting frustrated by the lack of functions, sloppy auto-focus and amount of noise even on low-ISO settings. Not the best weather conditions, but managed to take a few nice snaps.

Any academics out there used #Vink? Do you recommend? I'm trying it for the first time and the file is at 13% transcribed and it's been going for 4 hours already. This is crazy. How pokey does my laptop need to be? I should say the file is an MP4 and 3:29 hrs long. But still... This feels like downloading ripped off movies on a dial up connection: not worth the effort. And I daren't use my laptop for fear of slowing it down.
