For the folks out there curious (or the #sysadmin #mastoadmin #racknerd)'s out there. This is the rack which will shortly (hopefully!) be running MastodonAppUK and Universeodon. It isn't fully complete, there's a bit more network cabling to do and it's certainly not the tidiest job I've ever done but honestly we forgot some bits we needed the first time and yesterday involved adding the two switches at the top (Front and rear) as well as ripping out some of the original bits that were in there.
I will at some point write up a proper blog post about what we've deployed and why we chose what we chose but yeah, this has been a hell of a lot of time and work, and massive shout-out to @Fyrsta who back at the start of September took a day out of their day job to come help me rack this stuff, that Dell server certainly would have been difficult / impossible to solo rack!

@kkarhan I left them behind around the election cycle in the US after my year was up. Still can't find anything that I like for cheaper. #RackNerd is my go to for simple #Steam servers and such since it's insanely inexpensive VPS devices. I just need to get back to hardlined internet and I can get back to selfhosting all the things from home :ablobhyperwubbel:
Looking for a reliable and affordable VPS solution for your off-site hosting needs? RackNerd offers a wide range of VPS plans to suit various budgets and requirements.

I put together a dedicated affiliate page on my website to make it easier for people to see what #RackNerd has to offer for affordable VPS solutions!

Result of #Racknerd outage: one VPS recovered, the other gone and "replaced". Guess which one was the important one I had lots of data on?
Not 100% happy with the outcome, as I guess a question would be "How unrecoverable is it really?" If Racknerd throws out the "dead" drives could someone find ways to extract some of the data? I bet there are juicy keys and stuff on there, and I really don't know what was on mine (in total.)
So yes, am migrating to all new passwords and ssh keys for *gestures everywhere*.
Moreover, trying to get out of the habit of hosting things on VPSes and maybe just using them as caching port forwarders. I had all of mine on an OpenVPN network but I'm going to phase that out, it was starting to be awkward anyway what with the difficulty of getting some ISPs to route traffic to your own network.
#Racknerd outage continues. It's not the whole thing, but one of my two VPSes is still dead.
What appears to have happened is that the power outage revealed problems with (several?) RAID arrays. Looks like they're doing basic RAID 10 with two drives (if I'm interpreting it correctly) on each RAID 1 bit of the RAID 10.
A good reminder that while the phrase "RAID is not a back-up" is actually inherently false (it's real time back-ups! That's the entire idea for everything except RAID 0!), it complements rather than replaces alternative back up systems. You still want multiple back-ups. You still want off-site back-ups if you can.
That's the best customer "service" I've had in the last 10+ years.
... thats the ONLY customer service that's served me in the last 10+ years.
Thanks to @mattrambles , and a great annual easter deal my server cost has gone down by 80% by switching from #cloudways to #racknerd
And I am using a more powerful server than what I had with Cloudways.
You may ask where the catch is ....
It's a #linux box so I have to manage it.. but that's where #opensource shines!!
#hestiacp comes to the rescue! Wonderful freaking software - I was able to start hosting my site in less than an hour plus I got to geek out!
@mysticmodenet I use #Racknerd as well. My uptime vs #Hetzner has gone down from 100% to 99.645%. Doesn't affect me...
Whatever the quality of service, I haven't noticed that much or care.
Because if self-hosting costs me an arm and a leg, I'd rather use centralised services. 🤦🏻♀️
