In this post I discuss a simple, generic and portable format for disseminating Input-Output data, inspired from the graph representation of economic Input-Output matrices. It allows for a flexible and unified description which can be serialized into csv or an sqlite database.

I thought I remembered someone here was working on a library to create and analyse #hypergraphs (potentially in #rust but I'm not sure).

Does anyone know who that might be? I wanted to check the library but I haven't been able to find it (or if I have, I did not recognize it).

Basically, anyone working on a hypergraph library, please ping me 😉

TALKING WITH FRITJOF…
Morag Gamble’s permaculture Festival of Ideas certainly lived up to its name when she went live with it in May of this year. So, thanks Morag.

One of the highlights, well, the main highlight for me was the appearance of Fritjof Capra, the scientist whose book ‘The Tao of Physics’ , inspired and intrigued me when it was published decades ago. Fritjof went on the integrtate systems theory into his synthisis of modern science and traditional spiritual systems.

“Systems thinking and understanding networks are key attributes to understanding the world and how it works”, he said, they are key patterns in nature. They are also key concepts underlying the structure and application of permaculture.

Physics meets psychology in a groundbreaking study that confirms ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend.’ Using statistical physics, researchers have quantified the intricate dance of social relationships, validating a theory that’s as old as human interaction itself. Imagine applying these principles to de-escalate conflicts or to build more cohesive communities.

Any network theory that limits itself to dyadic relations, that is, links between pairs of nodes only, is already so radically reductionist that it is next to useless for understanding complex systems, especially those that involve symbolic processes or sign-using activity.

PHILOSOPHY + CURIOSITY. A book about curiosity just landed, Zurn & Basset's Curious Minds (2022). It mostly looks at how inquisitiveness relates to network science ("knowledge networks" and "edge work"), but also talks about flâneur walk-abouts. I noticed Zurn published Curiosity & Power recently too (2021), which looks at why certain forms of inquisitiveness are deemed threatening or transgressive. Topical.

Folks on here are trying to establish norms and customs and figure out "the medium is the message" on a new platform that is starting to scale and it's times like this I really wish I had advanced qualitative research skills because someone not me is going to write that paper. #qualitative #qualitativeresearch #researchmethods #socialmedia #networktheory

Intro post: I'm a professor of #Biology at the #UniversityOfWashington. My training is in #EvolutionaryBiology, #BehavioralEcology, #PopulationGenetics, and #Epidemiology. I did lots of work in #Bibliometrics and #NetworkTheory. I teach #DataLiteracy. These days I spend a lot of time thinking about the spread of #Misinformation, the #ScienceOfScience, and #PhilosophyOfScience. I do a lot of #BirdPhotography and love #ravens, #crows, and all #corvids.

For your trouble, here's a perfect crow.

I'm very interested in research on networks. My Ph.D. Sociology training got me to #systems theory (90s stuff) but I finished just before they started covering #network theory in Sociology. So if anyone has expertise or research on networks, esp dynamic and social network analysis, please let me know.
