I participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) this morning for the first time ever, counting 30 species including two that are not on my life list. It was fun. For myself, I only count birds that I can visually identify. But today I submitted birds the Merlin app “heard” and noted such observations as such when submitting my GBBC data. My favorite parts today were reporting 29 black vultures roosting in a tree near a runoff collection pond and reporting 200 black-bellied whistling ducks at the Lindshire Park pond in Austin, Texas—there were actually a bit more than 200 of those ducks at the pond, but I quit counting.

Spent some time this cold grey morning outside for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I saw only the usual flocks of house sparrows and starlings that live near the parking lot garden.
According to Merlin’s listening feature, I heard the neighbor blue jay (yep) and a cardinal (also a neighbor) and a house finch. Never seen a house finch!

Seems eBird turned on the filters for Great Backyard Bird Count.

All Northern flickers I've reported in southeast Michigan today are now considered rare.

Two days ago, I reported them without them being flagged as rare.

Starting tomorrow is the 4 day Annual Global Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). 1000's of birders, worldwide, will go out & bird.

I & people I work with have been participating for many years, this year too some events are planned. Sharing a picture of Kalij Pheasants, & also the promo poster.

A Landscape format picture of two Kalij Pheasants , on snow. The two birds (male & female) are standing next to each other - partly sideways to the observer. There head is to the centre and body flows to the right of the frame. The male is closer and looking straight into the camera - both eyes are visible- the female, which parallel but a bit forward has its head turned even more and looking at the camera through its right eye.

The male and female are approximately the same size, maybe around the size of medium to large rooster.

The legs are typically Pheasant like - Long cental middle two - two on the sides and a spur at the back. he Legs are bare till the thighs.

The male has a silver white crest an ivory reak not long not short and slighly down curved. The back is deep blue black with some speckling of silver white. A small part of the next nd the full breast and belly is downward streaked with silvery white feathers. Some silver while is also at th base of a tail (vertically erect like a helicopter tail rotor and not flat flat like a raptor tail)

The female has a brown crest - the bare skin around the eye is less prominent. The beak and feet are the same. The nture body and back is covered in downward facing white crescent moons set on a light non red mud brown.

Both birds are on show on the edge of a snow covered field / rock. Some brown and green plants are seen on the edges of the frameA sqaure poster sharing details of Bird Walks

I did the #GBBC on my walk this evening and identified 19 species and 210 specimens in just over half an hour. And saw no herons! What's up with that? I shouldn't complain - so fortunate to have this on my doorstep. Here's Black Oystercatchers, American Coots and 2 Least Sandpipers. #Birds 🪶

A group of American Coots, some of the nearly 100 hanging out locally this evening, some on rocks on the edge of the harbour, some in the water. These are black rotund waterfowl with striking white bills. Two Black Oystercatchers had just landed. similar sized black birds but these with long red bills. Two Least Sandpipers can just be seen bottom left that are flying off. The rocks look like concrete blocks covered in barnacles and seaweed, with sea is blue and a little choppy. Sun is setting giving it a golden glow.

This killdeer showed a real lack of situational awareness: came prancing up to me as if the chain link fence between us made me invisible! Maybe e was just very eager to be counted in the #GreatBackyardBirdCount!

A photo of a ditzy-looking shorebird on a tennis court. It fills almost the entire frame vertically, walking toward the photographer on spindly pale legs. It has a big black eye rimmed in bright orange, with a stripe across its forehead and the top of the eye that makes it look like it has a cartoon monobrow making a concerned expression. The horizontal black and white stripes continue down the neck to the white chest, while the back, head, and mustache region are a pleasant mocha shade. It has a long black beak for probing up wiggly delights from sand or mud, currently showing silty signs of use. The tennis court is lichen-covered, the chain link next to it is rusty, and twigs and debris scatter the clay behind it.The same killdeer slightly turned to show their distinctive profile, with the taut upturned tail and folded wings, the long legs held bent for scurrying, and the high-contrast black and white neck-rings.
