Seems eBird turned on the filters for Great Backyard Bird Count.

All Northern flickers I've reported in southeast Michigan today are now considered rare.

Two days ago, I reported them without them being flagged as rare.

A Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) in the Lesser & Greater Himalayas. Not an easily seen bird but not uncommon in the right habitat or season

The latin Specific name "viscivorus" translates as Mistletoe eater (also the origins of its common english name). I am yet to see it forage on Himalayan mistletoe equivalents.

A Potrait style photo of Mistle Thrush sitting on the winter bare branches of Tree, set against a blue sky.

The bird is above the photosgrapher, who has a good view of the underside.

The birds tail is flat and in the shade and about a 3rd as long as the rest of the body.

The bird looks Common Myna sized (but as per books is a bit bigger in body length).

The visible breast and belly us cover in dark round or roundish spots, set on white feather, which gather closer together towards the bottom and look like lines. The spots become smaller and fade away like streaks on a white throat.

The bill is dark, straight and sharp. The base is yellowish. Eyes are also dark (black).

Starting tomorrow is the 4 day Annual Global Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). 1000's of birders, worldwide, will go out & bird.

I & people I work with have been participating for many years, this year too some events are planned. Sharing a picture of Kalij Pheasants, & also the promo poster.

A Landscape format picture of two Kalij Pheasants , on snow. The two birds (male & female) are standing next to each other - partly sideways to the observer. There head is to the centre and body flows to the right of the frame. The male is closer and looking straight into the camera - both eyes are visible- the female, which parallel but a bit forward has its head turned even more and looking at the camera through its right eye.

The male and female are approximately the same size, maybe around the size of medium to large rooster.

The legs are typically Pheasant like - Long cental middle two - two on the sides and a spur at the back. he Legs are bare till the thighs.

The male has a silver white crest an ivory reak not long not short and slighly down curved. The back is deep blue black with some speckling of silver white. A small part of the next nd the full breast and belly is downward streaked with silvery white feathers. Some silver while is also at th base of a tail (vertically erect like a helicopter tail rotor and not flat flat like a raptor tail)

The female has a brown crest - the bare skin around the eye is less prominent. The beak and feet are the same. The nture body and back is covered in downward facing white crescent moons set on a light non red mud brown.

Both birds are on show on the edge of a snow covered field / rock. Some brown and green plants are seen on the edges of the frameA sqaure poster sharing details of Bird Walks

Winter Backyard Birding

Black oil sunflower seeds transformed my backyard into a small avian metropolis.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is taking place this weekend (14th-17th). It’s an international bird count meaning wherever you are you can take part!

If you already use Cornell Lab’s Merlin ID app or the eBird app your results will automatically be submitted over the weekend.

I missed the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch (the UK survey in January) so this is another chance to get involved.

This killdeer showed a real lack of situational awareness: came prancing up to me as if the chain link fence between us made me invisible! Maybe e was just very eager to be counted in the #GreatBackyardBirdCount!

A photo of a ditzy-looking shorebird on a tennis court. It fills almost the entire frame vertically, walking toward the photographer on spindly pale legs. It has a big black eye rimmed in bright orange, with a stripe across its forehead and the top of the eye that makes it look like it has a cartoon monobrow making a concerned expression. The horizontal black and white stripes continue down the neck to the white chest, while the back, head, and mustache region are a pleasant mocha shade. It has a long black beak for probing up wiggly delights from sand or mud, currently showing silty signs of use. The tennis court is lichen-covered, the chain link next to it is rusty, and twigs and debris scatter the clay behind it.The same killdeer slightly turned to show their distinctive profile, with the taut upturned tail and folded wings, the long legs held bent for scurrying, and the high-contrast black and white neck-rings.

I am super bummed that I didn't get to participate in the great backyard bird count this year. If by chance you have time today (Monday) you still can. Unfortunately, I can't make it work.

My favorite part of #greatbackyardbirdcount was not only seeing a Northern Flicker for the first time but happening to three in a single tree. I was trying to figure out if it was a small hawk or something before one finally got close enough to for a photo.

This just furthers my desire to do a proper birdwatching day in the near future!

The Great Backyard Bird Count

Counting on and off one day this weekend and I counted 7 species, 65 birds coming and going from our backyard feeder.

7 Tree Sparrow, 14 Black-eyed Junco, 5 Mourning Dove, 4 Bluejay, 20 Starling, 7 Cardinal, 8 American Goldfinch

I did capture a few of these with the camera, Goldfinch, Cardinal, and a Tree Sparrow.

#GreatBackyardBirdCount special visitors today included a Cooper’s Hawk (being seen off by our Crow Neighborhood Watch) and a pair of chestnut-backed chickadees, possibly the first time I’ve seen them in my yard!

Doesn’t this one look as if it has pollen on its wee fiz?

A small bird perched on the side of a fence rail. Bright saffron dusts its dark brown, soft head feathers and gathers below its big round black eye, like a bit of run mascara where the white cheek stripe begins. Its dark gray wings are folded neatly over the sleek homespun-russet back that gives it its name. Its spindly talons, quite long for its size, cling to the edge of the wood easily. It is completely adorable, and about to fly.

Speaking of ebird, did you know that this weekend (Friday-Monday inclusive) is the Great Backyard Bird Count?

If you have 15 minutes to spare today or tomorrow, you can be part of something very cool.

Pretty quiet at the feeders for the #GreatBackyardBirdCount this morning, but a Northern Flicker stopped by to nosh on some Virginia Creeper berries. Jim DeWitt photo. #birds #birding #GBBC

A type of woodpecker is perched in a tangle of vines on top of a chain link fence. Bundles of small blue berries dangle from red stems, and the bird has one in its long pointy beak. The top of its head is light brown, the cheek and nape are gray, its belly is light brown covered in large brown dots, and the back is soft brown with horizontal black barring.

Pulled off one more #GreatBackyardBirdCount over at my sister's house today. Not too many birds there, thanks to a Cooper's Hawk stopping by to look for a meal. A Bald Eagle was kind enough to fly past waaay up high. #birds #birding #GBBC

A medium-sized raptor is perched on a tree limb against a white background. It has rusty barring on its chest and belly, a gray cap, ruby red eyes, , and tail with gray and white striping, and long yellow toes equipped with sharp talons.
