Another early spring day today. Reed bunting started singing its song, the butterflies are warming up and bumblebee visit the first flowers.

Tide Dancers

Here’s a photograph of a gathering of Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) at Gulfport, Mississippi. Every time we visited, I ended up taking hundreds of pictures of these fascinating birds, so I like to post one every now and then.

"A wide gathering of Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) fills the shoreline with motion, contrast, and coastal energy. Along the water’s edge, dozens of birds stand in the shallows, their long, narrow bodies angled toward the surf as if listening to the rhythm of the tide. Their plumage forms a striking pattern—deep black across the back and wings, bright white along the underside—so the flock looks almost like a field of living silhouettes edged in light.

Above them, several skimmers slice through the air in low, purposeful flight. Their wings are long and sharply pointed, catching the light as they tilt and bank. The birds’ distinctive bills—vivid red at the base, black at the tips, and with the lower mandible longer than the upper—stand out even at a distance, giving each bird a slightly dramatic profile.

The water is shallow and restless, small waves folding over themselves as they reach the sand. Some birds stand ankle‑deep, reflections trembling beneath them; others wade forward as if preparing to launch. The scene feels alive with layered motion: wings beating overhead, water shifting below, and the quiet, communal presence of a flock gathered at the boundary between land and sea. The overall impression is one of wild order—chaos shaped into pattern by instinct and tide." - Microsoft Copilot

Checking in on the youngest local Tawny Frogmouth. Haven't seen the parents around as much lately as would be normal but hopefully the kid getting nicely chonky is a sign they're still both around and involved.

#BirdCallOut Holy moly! Cooper's Hawk! Just swooped onto my back wall, not 12 feet from me! Good thing my computer sits right up against this big window. (Pshaw to the architect who thought this was going to be the master bedroom. Master birdroom, more like!)

#birding #BackyardBirding

On a wall of reddish concrete blocks, a Cooper's Hawk sits. Within the wall is a small backyard with a green bush covered in yellow flowers. Beyond the wall are yellow-orange condos. But really, a wash is behind the wall, and the hawk sits so that it can look into the wash for tasty treats. The cellphone picture is not great quality, but the alternating gray and black horizontal stripes on the closed tail are visible, as are the white tips.

Many, many snow geese with a greater white-fronted goose or two

The sandhill cranes fly in to Merced in autumn to escape the northern winters. Then, as spring approaches, they fly back north. We've been lucky enough to see them both coming and going at Merced.

Other species also migrate on similar schedules. This photo shows a huge wave of snow geese flying over Merced. Among them - at the top right of the wave - is a much more darkly colored bird - a greater white-fronted goose. Close-up of a greater white-fronted goose.

Some lit ducks. 📷🌿🪶🦆

A photo of a pair of northern shoveler ducks (Spatula clypeata) lit by a patch of sunlight on a pond's surface, a female in the foreground and a male behind her. Both have their oversized bills just dipped in the water as they swim toward the right. The female is a mottled brown duck with brown eyes and an orange bill, while the male has mixed plumage: iridescent green on his head speckled with more muted brownish feathers, mixed mottled brown, chestnut, and black coloring on his torso, and bright yellow eyes.A photo of a male northern shoveler duck (Spatula clypeata) on a pond's surface in dim later afternoon light, facing toward the right of frame. It is in between breeding and immature or non-breeding plumage coloring, with iridescent green on its head speckled with more muted brownish feathers; mixed mottled brown, chestnut, and black coloring on his torso; a mostly black oversized bill, and bright yellow eyes. Part of a female duck is visible in the background behind it.

@tangledwing I like this photo because it does not show the yellow rump. Last week when I was out birding I saw a similar bird, and I concluded it was a "butter-butt" from seeing its yellow shoulders and yellow crown, though its rump was not visible.
