Live #Webinar Lecture: #RevolutionaryDreams: A #BlackPower #Bicentennial

Thursday, February 12, 2026, 6pm-7:30pm

"Lecture Description:
In this live virtual talk (via Zoom webinar), Dr. Amber N. Wiley discusses both her scholarly and pedagogical approaches to analyzing American history through the lens of the #AfroAmerican Bicentennial Corporation (ABC). Inspired by the ABC’s work to identify and protect cultural landscapes related to #BlackAmerican achievements ahead of the 1976 commemoration of the #AmericanRevolution, Wiley has taken up their charge to 'continue the revolution' through the 'process of #decolonization, a movement toward self-realization and self-government by people determined not to be kept in a subject status.' The lecture will highlight Wiley’s public history, preservation, and teaching work in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC related to revolutionary histories in each locale.

Author Bio:
Amber N. Wiley, PhD, is the Wick Cary Director of the Institute for Quality Communities at The University of Oklahoma. Wiley has over 20 years of experience in historic preservation, architecture, and community engagement. Through her teaching, research, and professional practice, she advances the history and narrative of design and preservation in Black communities. Her first book, Model Schools in the Model City, is a finalist for the 2026 Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) Book Prize. Her second book, Collective Yearning, is set for publication in May 2026. Amber received her PhD in American Studies from George Washington University. She also holds an MA in Architectural History and a Certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Virginia School of Architecture and a BA in Architecture from Yale University."

English-speaking New Year's parties in virtual worlds are weird for one reason: Not everyone is in the same timezone, so you're likely to have multiple New Year countdowns. Much unlike German-speaking New Year's parties where it's safe to assume that everyone's timezone is CET.

It isn't that easy anymore to impress me in OpenSim. I've seen just about everything by now.

But then, yesterday, there was (CW for the link: eye contact) Shandon Loring, looking just like Arlo Guthrie while reciting Alice's Restaurant Massacree. Inside a church modelled after Alice's and Ray's church with their little room in the belfry.

The third annual Bunker Party has started about half an hour ago, and it's our first visit there. (@Juno Rowland is with me again.) The musical motto, as usual, is that the unusual is usual. It's happening inside LyAvain Swansong's private bunker in Dereos. Maybe you know Ly from Star Citizen. And right now she is playing music from Star Citizen. This is probably the most harmless part of the evening.

We'll have three more DJs tonight, including @Akira and Xenos Yifu who are known for taking notes at each other's DJ sets.

The sim is not listed on OSW as it's a private residential sim, so there won't be any visitors who have just teleported where an OSW beacon told them that there are a few more avatars. Everyone who'll come here tonight will know what's going on.

Still, if there was a random visitor, they'd first have to find their way to the entrance to the bunker, then they'd have to get into the bunker, and then they'd have to find their way through the bunker. By the way, all signs are in German. Every other OpenSim avatar can only find parties that happen right in front of or around them anyway.

So OpenSimFest 2025 has started. But there hasn't been any announcement whatsoever, at least not recently. Even the official OpenSimFest website is dead as OpenSimFest is ongoing. OpenSimFest will span 16 days, but you only learn that in-world, too.

The grid is down to one normal expo sim; the other "expo" sim is the home of the fenced-in zombie zone now. It's a far cry from 2022 and 2023 with their many expo sims, also because several very prolific exhibitors haven't been at OpenSimFest since 2023.

Also, the grid seems to have become painfully slow. It isn't laggy, there's no rubber-banding. But things rez rather slowly. Anything below the lowest mesh LOD only shows when I'm close and even then sometimes only after one or two minutes. Some objects take that long to appear in the first place. I've got my doubts that the recent Firestorm beta is to blame.

At least there are more exhibits on that one expo sim. Last year, OpenSim World's Fair in the Wolf Territories hogged so many resources that about half of the few remaining expo parcels at OSFest remained vacant and had to be used as impromptu Arcadia Asylum showcases upon short notice so that there was at least something on the land. Now we have things like a tiny Venice exhibit built by Cooper Swizzle, complete with a keyframed gondola ride.

Speaking of Kitely, Kimm Starr has brought back the fairground freak show that had to be removed when Coopersville was shrunk prior to being passed to its new owner. (By the way, Coopersville is not named after Cooper Swizzle. That's coincidence.)

Surprisingly little is still a work in progress on the first day. Then again, the sole expo sim is entirely in use.

After last year's break, Remmy Ravenhurst is back with her products, including an assortment of freebies. She even brought something new, namely free boxes with textures from which PBR materials can be made and free boxes with untextured mesh models. Since they are full-perm, it's possible to export the roughness texture and convert it into a specular texture for Blinn-Phong.

In general, the usage of the two Stores sims has improved, and that isn't only because the northern one of the two Stores sims is down to only two big stores. Still, as usual, there isn't a single freebie store; all stores offer payware either mostly or only.

What still makes me wonder are the clothes that are being sold, often for prices that appear to be converted from Linden dollars to Gloebits 1:1, regardless of the Gloebit being more expensive than the Linden dollar.

There are boxes with classic layer and prim clothes that must be well over a decade old, and yet, in real-life currency, they cost more than a comparable fitted mesh outfit with PBR materials and Blinn-Phong fallback textures costs in Second Life. Then there are boxes with mesh clothes that are rigged for mesh bodies of which not a single one is officially being sold in OpenSim. So in order to be able to wear these legally bought clothes, you need a pirated mesh body.

Interestingly, the grid was not reset since last year. I'm still a member of the OSFest Participant group.

I'm at my very first virtual wedding. Niki Stark, co-founder of Stark, and Fiona Sweet got married, both in beautiful white gowns in a place decorated for the occasion. There is an altar, there is a buffet with cake and coffee and champagne, there are tables for those who don't want to have their cake or coffee while standing, there are flowers everywhere of course, and there is so much more. Many of the guests are Stark regulars, but I think I've never seen any of them dressed up like they are now.

I've got my doubts that there are many virtual world systems that allow for something even close to this.

Speaking of being dressed up, it actually took me a while to find something to wear for a wedding. It isn't like I've got too few dresses and gowns, but few of them really suit a wedding. But I finally could put my modified white half-PBR, half-Blinn-Phong pumps to good use, along with white lace stockings.

I think this is the first time that many at the party see me with anything on. I've never worn anything at Stark except the one time when Manda gave me SCUBA gear for an underwater tour, and I don't intend to change this. But the place where this party is going on does not, strictly speaking, belong to Stark Islands.

Also, speaking of being dressed up, this is the kind of event that so mercilessly reveals which of the late arrivals came for the wedding or at least the wedding party, and which simply went where there are lots of people according to OpenSimWorld without checking what's happening there. The former are dressed for the occasion. The latter may actually show up in torn jeans and not stay for long, once they've noticed that either they're hopelessly underdressed, or it simply isn't their kind of event.
