openSUSE considering to drop 32-bit ARM support, announced a survey to ask users whether they still rely on 32-bit ARM hardware support:

(I think it's a good thing that at least they ask their users directly, and don't just drop the proposal if there's a strong pushback like what Fedora did.)

Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” Reached End of Life, Upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04

fed.brid.gy/r/https://9to5linu

Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole becomes EOL

Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole, which was released on October 2024, has now reached a stage where no updates for it will be made. This means that Canonical won’t make any more updates to this version of the operating system.

Today, we are sad to announce that Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole has become EOL, which summarizes the points above. After today, there will be no more official support, package updates, and security updates. You’ll have to upgrade your system if you want to continue receiving support and package updates.

We recommend upgrading your system to Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin, but that, too, will be obsolete in the next six months, beginning January 2026. Due to this, you’ll have to upgrade to that first, then wait for Ubuntu 25.10 to be released to be able to upgrade to the next LTS version, which will be released next April.

Upgrades to Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin are suspended

The Ubuntu release team have identified some of the issues that may affect all Ubuntu upgrades from the Oracular Oriole, which is a 20th year anniversary version of Ubuntu when it was unveiled back in 2004, to the Plucky Puffin that was released a week ago. The following issues were discovered:

The release team have decided to halt all upgrades to the Plucky Puffin while the following critical issues mentioned above are being investigated. Once they are fixed, users can upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04 again. This is done as a safety measure to avoid people having to deal with critical bugs like these after the upgrade.

@gherhartd from my work as sysadmin and my testing of #ubuntu2410 - desktop Snaps are absolute, hot, steaming pile of garbage. They are somehow even worse than I remember from #ubuntu2004 .
On servers however, when you use them for terminal-only soft, like Docker, Kubernetes, LXD - they are the best thing that happened to Linux server.
It's weird, but it is what it is 🤷‍♂️

My woes with #ubuntu2410 continue. After waking up my computer from suspend, it will randomly just go back to sleep after 5-6 seconds. After repeating this 2-3 times it seems to settle down and function fine.

It's been a long time since I've had such a buggy upgrade from #Canonical .

Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole gets the KDE 6 update! This means that you’ll be able to experience the newness and the awesomeness of the modern KDE desktop that replaces the 5.x series that was released on 2014.

It’s a revolution for Kubuntu users who are looking for the Plasma 6 desktop. If you’re running Kubuntu 24.10, you can now upgrade to Plasma 6 by initiating the full system upgrade.

Did you remember this development version of Plasma 6 that was demonstrated by KaOS back on September 2023? And did you remember that we had told you in the early stages of development that KDE 6.x will be included in the final version of Ubuntu 24.10?

KDE Plasma 6 features a sleek desktop design that follows the modern principles of this time and age, as well as new features, such as the return of Desktop Cube, the new “Ocean” sound theme, and the support for Islamic Hijri calendar. It also brings improvements that improve your user experience, such as panel settings being exposed in a nicer way and the visualizer for the Night Light transition time.

Now, you can see the demonstration of the desktop running under KDE Plasma 6.1!

Enjoy!
