The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) may be considering a shocking giveaway: transferring 775 acres of the Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge to Elon Musk’s SpaceX. If this plan moves forward, it would carve up federally protected refuge lands that were set aside for wildlife, habitat connectivity, and the long-term public good—not private industrial expansion.

Unfortunate that the administration would block a well-thought out, small expansion for fish and wildlife. But not surprising.

"[W]hat the withdrawal does is it stops private property owner from doing wants to do with his own land – to sell it to the Fish & Wildlife Service or to offer a conservation easement. So they turned the tables on the supporters of a small federal footprint and said, 'here you're denying private property owners their alternatives.'"

"For wildlife advocates, Nesvik’s nomination represents another instance of President Trump attempting to undermine the federal government from within. Throughout Nesvik’s 30-year career, he called for the Endangered Species Act to be “pruned,”" 👁️ www.sierraclub.org/sierra/can-f... #USFWS #wildlife

Sweeping layoffs of federal employees have struck the program responsible for controlling the invasive sea lamprey that threatens fish across the Great Lakes, the earth’s largest freshwater ecosystem. Among hundreds of US Fish and Wildlife Service employees terminated this month were 12 members of the Great Lakes sea lamprey control program. arstechnica.com/science/2025/0

A couple of weeks ago #USFWS proposed that the Antillean manatee (as seen in #PuertoRico) be added to the #endangeredSpecies list, but not the #Florida #manatee. The comment period is open until March 17. 🔗 federalregister.gov/documents/

Gloomy Monday in the #GreatSwampNationalWildlifeRefuge in @newjersey

Pro tip: If you want the whole place to yourself, show up on a rainy weekday afternoon less than an hour before dusk. It's beautiful, quiet, and just a tiny bit creepy 🤩

Another great video from Cornell's Ornithology Lab - this one highlights the importance of the Yukon Delta for migratory birds from around the globe.

If the area is compromised, we will disrupt migratory patterns for millions of birds!

Brady Dennis: How the world’s last wild red wolves are avoiding extinction: The endangered wolves face multiple threats, from cars to climate change. A renewed push to save them in eastern North Carolina has brought cautious optimism.

"In April, the latest glimmer of hope appeared here in the only spot on Earth where endangered red wolves remain in the wild.

Five pups were born to a pair of wolves — a female known as 2413, and a male known as 2444 — marking the third year in a row that at least one new litter began life in this corner of coastal North Carolina.

The births sparked joy among red wolf advocates and the small team of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees who oversee the decades-long effort to restore a native animal that once roamed widely throughout the Southeast, but saw its numbers in the wild plummet to single digits by 2020."

I recently joined #PasoPacifico #MARN #USFWS in search of nesting yellow-naped Amazon #parrots in a mangrove forest considered a parrot hideout. This critically endangered bird has been extirpated from most of Eastern #ElSalvador. We didn't find the nests, but last week, a community ranger (a former hunter) contacted me to say he was in touch with the poacher who knows where the nests are. We will soon meet with the poacher to discuss alternatives to poaching and their choice to help a species.

Seeds great, yet it's deply concerning to hear that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has decided not to list gray wolves, a sacred species to Native Americans in the western U.S., under the Endangered Species Act.
Total failure of US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland; a Native American. Beyond belief and shameful.
