Yellowstone is a place of change, and this view highlights a place where change is constant and evident—the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs. Terraces form when water rises through limestone, which then allows the water to carry high amounts of dissolved calcium carbonate. At the surface, carbon dioxide is released and the calcium carbonate is deposited, forming travertine, the chalky white rock of the terraces. In the foreground are the parade grounds for historic Fort Yellowstone—the focal point of daily life at the fort.

The camera is located at an elevation of approximately 2,100'.

At 10,219 feet, Mount Washburn towers above Dunraven Pass between Tower Junction and Canyon Village. A fire lookout stationed at the summit provides a popular destination for day hikers, as well as housing for an employee who watches for and tracks fires throughout the summer. This webcam is located inside the living quarters on the top floor and looks out to the northeast.

Live view of the northwest flank of Mauna Loa; the view is from the southeast flank of Hualālai. This camera is a pan-tilt-zoom model and the view may change depending on activity.

The webcams are operational 24/7 and faithfully record the dark of night if there are no sources of incandescence or other lights. Thermal webcams record heat rather than light and get better views through volcanic gas. At times, clouds and rain obscure visibility. The cameras are subject to sporadic breakdown, and may not be repaired immediately. Some cameras are observing an area that is off-limits to the general public because of significant volcanic hazards.

Tides determine when access to this coastal area in Redwood National and State Parks is possible. With the recent full moon, sand has been carried quite a ways up the beach, with some even being deposited on top of the large pieces of driftwood near the back of the beach (foreground). In the background, lines of breaking waves approach the shore. In the center, a large near-shore rock stands out against the blue sky. Wave-like patterns appear on the driftwood in the foreground, which might suggest that this is a piece of curly redwood.
