Does anyone have a good recommendation for a very inexpensive (cheap as shit, in fact, as cheap as possible without running into "we pressed a key and it never worked again") full or nearly full size (88) midi controller / keyboard??

Perfectly happy to buy used. The closer I can get to the $100 price point, the better. It's fine if it doesn't work without a computer (I have those).

EDIT: thank you to everyone who gave suggestions and help! After a LOT of digging around, comparing, contrasting needs (spouse and I will need marginally different things on it) I found one that worked for me in the desired price range. I'll post more once it arrives and we can test it!

The underside of a cassetton, on the bottom is a supported piece of wood with the backside of 5 arcade buttons, above it are 5 wooden piano type keys meant to press the top arcade button, a threaded rod supports the keys.

A wooden housing resembling a piano with 5 keys includes 5 holes for speed control of each piano key.

5 wooden piano style keys are being fitted with small cut pipe made of PVC. They are glued on with hot glue.

An open bottom housing case made of wood, a platform inside, glued in place holds 5 arcade buttons.

After holes were drilled into the piece of wood another wooden frame is glued on top to frame the 5 holes. Paper towel, and a large glob of wood glue and a paint brush sit above

I just realised that an ocarina is basically a whistle with a bigger resonating chamber and finger holes. Might be funny to explore the liminal space between the two cousins.
