#Muntjac

@Narrowboat_LunaBetty
We're certainly begining to feel settled. We didn't expect to see much #wildlife here. We were spoilt at Ruston House as you can see from my old web site.

However we were surprised to hear #Muntjac #deer the second week after we arrived and pictures of one on the neighbour's front #garden on 22 December.

Why Britain has a deer problem.

Deer numbers have rocketed over the last 40 years and particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic.

A muntjac fawn heading into the undergrowth near the Sandringham Railway path. Although it is now old enough to be independent it is still obviously a fawn and nothing like full grown, although even full grown these are quite small. It has thick brown furh, a black flash on its head , two quite prominent ears, and one of its two black eyes are visible.

We followed this morning's #plan, starting by going to #Neatishead #Staithe and buying #provisions and having a #coffee and #Norfolk #shortcake at the #community #shop.

The #dyke narrows considerably as you near the staithe but what amazed us was seeing a #Muntjac deer on the return down #Limekiln #dyke

The #Muntjac became #daily #visitors during #May. However, the shots I got at 07:46 on 13 May were unusual as I've never seen two taking a sit-down together.

Just transferred a month's worth of stuff from my #camera to #computer and found this video shot from our #lounge on 9 May.

You'll notice the #heron immediately, as that was the #focus of my attention. You'll probably notice the pair of #swans before you spot the #muntjac deer in the #background

In a little clearing in the trees at Lackford I was staying still and quiet, listening to the calls of a Green Woodpecker.

The bushes started gently rustling nearby and this female Muntjac appeared. It wasn’t overly sure after seeing me but carried on its way.

Back in March it was the #Muntjac #deer. Now it seems to be the #season when the #heron makes daily visits.

The concedes to the clearly stronger . The panda is large and threatening.

The #Muntjac #deer just can't keep away.

2025-03-29

When you see #Muntjac #deer two or three times a day from the windows in your house you just don't bother to #snap them every time.

I still worry that these images are not the best as I only have my cheap phone available to capture them.

I saw the #male first. It was a few minutes later that the #female arrived.

@Broadfork
I just wish I had a good answer to that question or one that might impress.

Around COVID time we had a #raisedbed constructed. The trouble is the #Muntjac. The #deer eat everything, so that's been unused since that first #season. (You can also blame wife's health as a contributory factor.) It's also used in a few window boxes, but that's about it as far as convention goes.

Dare I confess that a lot is mixed with the chippings we generate from storm damaged trees and those that have died and is spread on the paths. The soil is basically peat and as it dries footsteps grind it away exposing tree roots that become a trip hazard. The original idea was that it might help create smooth grass paths, but in such wooded conditions there's little sun and ground that's much above the water table dries out too much for grass.

My wife has suggested giving it away or selling it, but I'm very reluctant to let anything go off site. The ground's low enough as it is.

Someone saw a muntjac deer at the allotments yesterday. Any kind of fencing is currently against the rules, and apparently they are "notorious browsers". Oh dear...
