I was ridiculously pleased to spot this Little Grebe at the creek basin bridge in town this afternoon! 😊 It was following the turning tide back down the creek, diving and surfacing as it went. A proven fishing tactic for the location, I suspect 🤔 #LittleGrebe #TachybaptusRuficollis | #Faversham #Kent #England | #birdsoftheworld #birds

A Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) begins its hunting foray down Faversham Creek. The creek is at high tide, with the muddy water reaching the level of the bank on the far side. Any higher and it would cover the grass there, as indeed it often does. A serious flood tide, which occurs at least a couple of times a year I reckon, would see the water level around a metre higher! The road you can just about make out at the extreme top right often gets impassable to traffic. What the future holds for the area is a real concern, I believe 😔The best uncropped photo of the bird that I managed to get on my phone 🙂A cropped photo of the same bird. I daren't crop it tighter, for fear of losing the little definition it had to begin with 😅Goodbye, Little Grebe, it was a real pleasure to see you! 😍

Little Grebe on its floating nest.
This is at least the third attempt for this pair; previous nests either sank or were blown too far from safety.

The #LittleGrebe #nest that appeared this week has an #egg already! That was quick 😎
Also, it’s a very big egg for such a small bird 😳

A little Grebe was hunting through the wetlands at Sculthorpe, it’s caught itself something to eat.

On Friday I watched a Little Grebe busily finding food (mostly Mayflies) for the last of his chicks. Frustratingly, the little Little Grebe was spending most of his or her time on the far side of the pool. Eventually a closer approach was made and I managed to capture the food pass on camera a few times.

Photo of an adult Little Grebe, possibly a male as the colours are intense and, in the case of this individual, rather dark (the plumage of females have been described as being a ‘washed out’ version of the male’s). The bird is on a pool of water, facing towards the right side of the image. The neck, though fairly short, is stretch up and the head is pointing down with the beak almost touching the chest – I photographed this one during a preening session. The body is mostly dark black-brown in colour, but the rump (there is no tail to speak of) is whitish. Most of his head and his fairly short beak are black too, but there is a large reddish-brown patch extending from his cheek down his neck, also his beak has a pale yellow patch at its base, and a white tip. The eye is brown, with a black pupil.Close-up photo showing just the heads and front parts of the bodies of an adult Little Grebe (on the right) about to pass an item of food (an insect of some kind) to his youngster (on the left). The tips of the birds’ beaks are touching. The adult has largely black plumage relieved by a rich red-brown patch extending from the cheek down the front and side of the neck; also there is more brown visible on the flanks than was the case in the photo showing the adult by himself. The youngster is covered with fluffier, downier plumage which looks rather scruffy; that plumage is mostly various shades grey but on the head there are some paler, whitish or light brown stripes. The beak of the youngster is a pale brownish yellow with some darker patches, contrasting with the mostly black beak of the adult.A photo of an adult and young Little Grebe together on a pool of water; the adult (probably a male) is on the point of passing a Mayfly, held in his beak, to his offspring. The adult is on the right side of the image, closer to us, the body facing away from us and to the right, with the head turned towards the left. This gives us a good view of the fluffy back end of the bird, where there is no tail as such. The feathers in the middle of the rump are darker than the whitish and greyish feathers around it, and those paler feathers in turn give way to reddish-brown plumage. The feathers on the back and flanks are mostly black in appearance, and black plumage extends up the back of the neck, over the top of the head, and down the front of the face. The cheeks and the sides of the neck are a rich red-brown colour. The youngster is covered with fluffier, downier plumage which looks rather scruffy; that plumage is mostly various shades grey but on the head there are some paler, whitish or light brown stripes. The beak of the youngster is a pale brownish yellow with some darker patches, contrasting with the mostly black beak of the adult.A photo of an adult and young Little Grebe together on a pool of water; the youngster (on the right) has a Mayfly in his or her beak which has just been provided by the adult. The youngster is covered with fluffy / downy plumage which looks rather scruffy; that plumage is mostly various shades grey but on the head there are some paler, whitish or light brown stripes. The beak appears to be a pinkish-brown colour in this photo whereas in other photos of the same bird it looks paler and more yellowish. The adult bird, most likely a male, is on the left, only his head and the front part of his body are visible. He is facing towards the youngster with his turned slightly away from us, so that the side of the head that we can see is partly in shadow. The plumage on the back and sides is mostly black, with some reddish-brown showing here and there. Black feathers extend up the back of the neck onto the top of the head, but on the cheeks and the side of the neck the colour is a rich red-brown.

Little grebes are the smallest European grebes with a body length of about 25 cm (which also includes the great crested grebe). They are rather rare.

Der Zwergtaucher versteckt sich meistens im Schilf, ist aber über den ganzen Teich mit seinem trällernden Gesang zu hören.
The little grebe usually hides in the reeds, but its trilling song can be heard throughout the pond.
