The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has a new severe #weather climatology page. Drag the slider to see how severe weather favors different portions of the U.S. throughout the year.
Note, severe weather is defined as thunderstorm-derived winds of 50KT (25.7 m/s) or greater, hail of 1 inch (2.54 cm) or greater, or a tornado.

Ted Fujita was a great meteorologist but this blatant white washing of the history of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings is unhinged. #weather #history

Manhattan Project National Historic...
You've probably heard of tornado damage being rated on an
“F" or "EF" scale. But how did that scale come to be? What
connection could a tornado damage rating scale have to the
Manhattan Project?
On August 9, 1945, young Japanese scientist Tetsuya “Ted”
Fujita was at home near the cloud-covered city of Kokura,
Japan when Bockscar, a B-29 Superfortress carrying the Fat
Man atomic bomb, aborted dropping the bomb on Kokura and
headed towards its secondary target, Nagasaki. At 11:02 AM
local time, Fat Man detonated over Nagasaki, killing and
wounding tens of thousands. Shortly after, Fujita joined a team
of researchers to analyze the effects of the blast at both
Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Studying the burn shadows on
bamboo flutes placed in local cemeteries, Fujita was able to
determine the trajectory of the blast and at what elevation the
bomb exploded.
With an interest in storms since childhood, Fujita took what he
learned at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and applied it to storm
damage assessments. His research on a particular severe
thunderstorm in Japan in 1947 caught the eye of faculty at the
University of Chicago, where he was invited to study in 1953.
He ultimately devised the Fujita scale in 1971 (now the EF, or
Enhanced Fujita scale), which measures tornado damage on a
scale of 0 to 5.
