@fsf One of my favorite things I saw about #freesw in a long time.

Want to check spellings and grammatical errors but don't have a word processor at hand? Try this...

➡️Online Grammar, Style & Spell Checker
languagetool.org

- Checks spelling errors
- Checks grammar mistakes
- Context sensitive menus for fixing errors
- Supports 25+ Languages
- LGPL licensed
- Self hostable
- Has addons/extensions for your browser and your favorite word processor too. Including @libreoffice and OpenOffice.

This screenshot shows Languagetool.org website with default text in the inputbox.

Text says the following:

"Instantly Enhance Your Writing

LanguageTool’s multilingual grammar, style, and spell checker is used by millions of people around the world
Add to Firefox It’s free
"

And then has input area where the default text is placed and errors are highlighted. The text input says the following:

"LanguageTool is your intelligent writing assistant for all common browsers and word processors. Write or paste your text here too have it checked continuously. Errors will be underlined in different colours: we will mark seplling errors with red underilnes. Furthermore grammar error's are highlighted in yellow. LanguageTool also marks style issues in a reliable manner by underlining them in blue. did you know that you can sea synonyms by double clicking a word? Its a impressively versatile tool, e.g. if youd like to tell a colleague from over sea's about what happened at 5 PM in the afternoon on Monday, 27 May 2007."

At the bottom-left of the input it says "9+ writing issues found". At the bottom-right it says "623 characters, 104 words".This screenshot shows the spelling correction feature of LanguageTool.org.

The word "colours" is highlighted and clicking on it shows a popup menu. The menu is shown here on this screenshot.

The menu says: "Spelling; Possible spelling mistake. 'colours' is British English."

Then 2 buttons saying: "colors" and "Switch to British English".

Below this are 2 options: 'Add "colours" to personal dictionary' and 'Ignore in this text'

@UnitooWebRadio Enjoying your radio. And thanks for setting everything up with #freesw.

I noticed you have a Matomo setup, probably to understand which songs visitors like. I think you should have a Like button which I can press if I like a song. Or maybe a 5 star rating system. Matomo has such a event tracking feature, so this should be easy to implement. This way you get direct feedback, without relying on just visit time.

@blenderdumbass Yeah. I guess #freesw is usually developed for good reasons. I didn't see a #freesw malware around. Maybe because so many eyes are watching it? Transparency?

So I guess I agree. It should keep it safer because bad code would be difficult to hide.

Apple joins Blender development fund.

I think I saw Adobe and Microsoft on the list too. Some of the biggest makers of #proprietary software are now gradually reaching their hands to help #freesw projects. That must mean something is changing. I wish the change continues (but without destroying the communities behind it).

@suguru Yeah. #freesw may have some features less and may require a bit of learning (sometimes it is the opposite and better than nonfree software) but at the end it gives back the user one thing: freedom.

When I first heard about Linux it was around 2003-05. KDE/GNOME and everything had no standards/inconsistent and many things CLI based. Wasn't sure why people used it. But now I get it. For them it is better to learn something hard and be free than enjoy ease of use in a walled garden.

2021-10-02

@suguru Totally agree. The value of #freesw is understood only when someone uses it. It doesn't spy, it doesn't do anything that the user doesn't want, computer listens to the users again. Just the perfect kind of software. Even some years ago people didn't know such kind of software exists.

But now, with some prominent Linux channels and internet communities, Free Software is slowly getting popular. I've seen many famous content creators use/mention GIMP, Blender, Krita, KVM in their videos.

@kzimmermann "For a consumer company it makes sense not to allow bug reports ( I don't think Microsoft ever offered that either in their history.)"
It made me realize how stupid big corps are. In #freesw at least we can yell at the devs if something doesn't work. 😆

@ademalsasa Thanks for the article.

For search engines I can also recommend trying out Metager.org. They're a meta search engine, so it's kind of similar to searx but provides a consistent search experience. They're nonprofit, so no tracking no ads. Also has an onion site for privacy: metager.org/tor

The source is available as #freesw and can be #selfhost-ed: gitlab.metager.de/open-source/
