Perched Cormorants
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

These dead branches on which the birds are perched (and notice their webbed feet) extended over a small pond at the time. Due to drought conditions the pond dried up years ago.

Two ungainly looking birds are perched on dead branches that lean right almost horizontally. The birds are mostly dark, but with very light brown breasts and neck; long pale yellow bills with a small hook at the tip; black legs and black webbed feet grasp the branches; long necks that are hunched down into an 's' shape. Blurred background vegetation is light yellow in the bottom half, light orange red in upper half.

The #moon tonight x36 magnification. Sorry for the blurry quality, it was made "free hand" through the window and it's thefirst attempt. I'm still looking for an affordable #digiscoping adapter for my #scope.

Waxing Gibbous Moon
Central New Mexico, USA

I was looking for a photo for #MoonMonday and came across this old one. Curiously enough, the moon today is in almost the exact same phase as this 2009 image!

I took this photo using a 5.1 MP Olympus Wide Zoom camera though my Swarovski spotting scope. Don't recall the eyepiece setting.

Snow Geese on Ice
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

In honor of the Winter Solstice and Throwback Thursday I dug out one of my earliest photos from the refuge. Taken in December 2009 through a spotting scope of geese standing on a frozen pond. I reprocessed it this morning, mostly to increase the size for your viewing pleasure 😎

Several Snow Geese are standing together in a line on a frozen pond; the pond has dead plant stalks with dried leaves sticking up out of the ice near the geese; the ice is light blue.

These were my first attempts at digiscoping. I have only recently bought a spotting scope, it has made a big difference to my enjoyment of birding, especially waterbirds.

I wrote about using a spotting scope + iPhone to capture wildlife (and Canada!) from our property on Orcas Island.

I was recently gifted a spotting scope by my amazing in-laws and man, I love it.
I’m using a Phone Skope case to attach my phone to the viewfinder and it works really well.

I'd been hearing this bird for a while before I finally saw it swooping between low bushes.

The first picture was, unfortunately, taken through a small shrub so it looks a little washed out. Starting to think it may be worth investing in a proper camera / lens rather than strapping my phone to a monocular.

Starting to figure out how to use the scope and get some better shots. It's much easier with the larger birds that tend to stand still for a bit.

Got a spotting scope and the zoom capability is a game-changer. Even having forgot my tripod and camera adapter, the pictures came out pretty well.

From the same trip: a Hoary Redpoll! This is a target species for birders up here, who are happy to pick just one out in a flock of darker Common Redpolls, and to have it distinct enough to confirm it's truly Hoary and not just a light Common.

We found a flock of 6 foraging together among the alders, and became (very) minor birding celebrities that month.

This is one of the six, another early test of #digiscoping, and one that showcases how difficult crisp focus is to achieve!

A round, mostly white bird sits amid fine alder twigs with small alder cones. The birds face has a mask-like patch of dark feathers and a blob of red on its forehead, fading towards the back. Faint streaks can be seen around the sides and back of the head and shoulders. A tiny pointed yellow bill sticks out from black face mask. The same bird and framing as the previous picture, but this time the bird is shaking its head side to side, but the shutter speed is slow enough that the whole head is blurred in a circle around the red cap, which is at the center of rotation. The face is completely blurred away.

Early experiment with #digiscoping bird photos: an American Coot at the Bass Ponds of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife refuge. This is using the Swarovski ATX scope, most likely with the Swarovski digiscoping adapter, and a Sony a 6300. Taken in April 2016.

Not the most crisp images, but I do love the patterns the feathers make as the bird stretches. Focusing is HARD to get precise when digiscoping!

#birding #birdphotography

An American Coot, a dark gray marsland bird, stands up to its ankles in still water, one wing slightly extended in a stretch, showing individual feathers fanned out as it gazes off into the distance. The same American Coot from the previous photograph, one wing slightly drooped mid-stretch, but looking back at you with its thick white bill standing out against its black head.A third image of the American Coot, with both wings slightly extended in a stretch, though not as extended as in the first photo: they appear more curved shelves of feathers set off the round body, downturned past the tail.

Happy Friday! Did some birding while on holiday. Here's a Great Blue Heron through the spotting scope. Like an image in a locket...

Had no idea the lunar occultation of Mars was tonight until @MarianneDenton mentioned it. Luckily had 40 minutes to run home, grab my gear, then find an empty lot.

#MOON and #JUPITER. Recently the Moon was close to Jupiter. Here they are on the left for size comparisons. Then I zoomed in on Jupiter to see its own Moon casting shade on Jupiter.
