Three Sisters Lighthouses, Eastham, MA, 7/9/2023. The current location of these lighthouses is in a wooded area behind Nauset Beach, away from the water but a short walk from where Nauset Light currently stands and is still illuminated. But they used to sit atop the bluffs of Nauset Beach. The ground on which sat no longer exists: that land had long ago eroded and fell into the sea.

These lighthouses have an interesting history, which I won’t go into in great detail here: I recommend reading the more detailed history at lighthousefriends.com. Here’s the condensed version:

The original three lights were first lit in 1839. No one seems to know why three lights were needed, which I find hilarious. They were replaced in 1892 with these three towers. Two of those towers were damaged in a storm in 1898. In 1918 those two towers were auctioned off for $3.50: the buyer relocated them nearby and made them part of a summer cottage. The remaining tower was replaced in 1923 by one of the twin cast iron lighthouses in Chatham (now the current Nauset Light) and was likewise auctioned off and turned into a summer cottage. The National Park Service later acquired all three lighthouses and in 1983 placed them in their current location at the Cape Cod National Seashore.

While I’m grateful these lighthouses have been preserved and are very accessible to the public, to me it is sad to think of a lighthouse cut off from the water. So when I visit these lighthouses, it is a melancholy experience.

I listened to an interview on CBC As It Happens last night of one of the OLAUG members. One comment stuck with me: She said as you get old you lose your memory and some physical strength but you can still find wonder around you. I very much agree with her.

Accidents happen. It’s the response that defines the partner. 🛠️

Earlier this week, a utility pole strike in knocked out power and connection to Outer Cape Health Services. For healthcare providers, connectivity is essential for patient care.

While utility crews replaced the pole, our team worked through the night to restore the fiber link safely.

Sunset tints the last of thunderstorm clouds pink. It's low tide at the saltmarsh and the boat is sitting on the mud.

Fotostory Ostküste

Nachtflug. Hoch über Washington, Baltimore, Philly, New York, Long Island, Cape Cod.

Boston Logan International KBOS → Provincetown KPVC

Destination: Nantucket. Reality: An unscheduled landing at the northern tip of Cape Cod. Between a fuel complication and some challenging crosswinds on the approach, it was a busy day in the cockpit.

A small turboprop aircraft is airborne, positioned above the vast snow-covered urban area of Boston. The plane flies against a bright blue sky with scattered white clouds. Below, a dense cityscape features numerous high-rise buildings, their surfaces blanketed in snow, along with lower residential structures and wide streets also covered in snow. Several dark blue waterways, including rivers and a large body of water near the horizon, cut through the city. Bridges span these waterways, connecting different parts of the urban grid. In the distance, the city extends toward the horizon, where a hazy layer meets the sky. The overall scene depicts a winter day in a major metropolitan area with clear weather and the aircraft moving through the sky above the snow-laden city.A white single-engine propeller airplane with a dark stripe on its fuselage flies above a curved landmass. The aircraft is positioned near the upper right of the frame, heading toward the center. Below, a narrow, winding road cuts through a landscape of snow or ice-covered terrain along a large, deep blue body of water. The landmass curves into a semi-circular shape, with the road tracing its edge. Thick, fluffy white clouds fill most of the background, partially obscuring the blue sky visible in the upper left corner. The water appears smooth and expansive, bordered by the snowy shore. The scene is bright, suggesting daylight, with the airplane slightly above the landmass and clouds framing the upper portion of the view.A small single-engine turboprop aircraft, predominantly white with a black lower section and a red stripe running along the fuselage, is in flight. Its propeller spins rapidly, visible through motion blur effects. Sunlight glints off the wing where the sun is low on the horizon, suggesting early morning or late afternoon. The aircraft hovers above a vast expanse of deep blue ocean, with a small, sandy island visible in the distance. The island’s edges are lined with low-lying greenery, and its shoreline appears slightly curved. Above, the sky is filled with fluffy white clouds, some illuminated by the sun to create soft highlights, while others cast subtle shadows. The aircraft’s tail fin displays the text "TBM" in red, with a smaller marking that read "930". The scene conveys a serene flight over open water with a distant landmass on the horizon.A cockpit view features multiple digital flight displays showing instrument readings for landing. The left screen shows "LOC" and "GS" labels with numerical values such as 120, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 180, 340, 035, indicating course deviation, glide slope, and altitude parameters. The center screen displays navigation details including "HDG", "ALT SEL", "CRS1", "CRS2", "V/S", "SPD", "ALT", "A/P", "NAV", "FG", "FMS". The right screen mirrors the left display elements. The aircraft is on final approach to land, evidenced by the runway ahead and precise instrument readings. Outside the windshield, a coastal landscape unfolds: a runway surrounded by wetlands with water patches, dense vegetation, and scattered trees. To the left, a large body of water meets a cloudy sky, while the right side shows forested terrain. The landscape combines snowy areas, water bodies.

THE INCREDIBLE CASUALS
That's That
1987 UK pressing

It’s not rocket science.
Just fun, energetic meat-and-potatoes rock n roll.

(Sort of) from my neck of the woods in the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts, and guitar player Johnny Spampinato played in NRBQ.

Even though these songs themselves aren’t complicated, the record SOUNDS great.
Loud, snappy, and the guitars sound excellent, particularly on the VERY catchy “I Got To Move”.

Pretty fun record that’s worth a spin every few years.

Witness the stunning beauty of Herring Cove Beach in Cape Cod, where the ocean polishes pebbles and rolls them over an alligator-shaped log. Crashing waves immerse us in the mystical power of the sea.

You know it’s cold out when the salty water in the ocean begins to freeze (and stays frozen!).
Saw these ice-capped boulders this afternoon while taking a chilly walk along the ocean. Temps had peaked at 16 deg (F) (-9C) before they drop back down again. Next up—- lots of snow! #CapeCod #ocean #winter

Photo of end of rock jetty protruding into ocean as viewed from beach. Small wave is splashing onto end of jetty. The tops of the boulders are covered with ice. Blue sky overhead at horizon.

I took this photo today on a beach on Cape Cod, MA.

Note that when saltwater freezes at around 28 degrees (F), it freezes into freshwater ice, as the salt remains in liquid form.
