Today in Labor History February 5, 1958: The U.S. Air Force lost a Mark 15 thermonuclear bomb in the water near Tybee Island, near Savannah, Georgia. The B-47 bomber was on a simulated combat mission. It collided with an F-86 fighter plane, midair, and jettisoned the bomb in order to make an emergency landing without detonating it. Sources vary on whether it was a “dummy” bomb, or if it had a plutonium core. If it was a “dummy” bomb, it still carried 400 lbs of conventional high explosives, enough to do considerable local damage. However, Assistant Secretary of Defense W.J. Howard, told Congress that the Tybee Island bomb was a "complete weapon, a bomb with a nuclear capsule" and one of two weapons lost that contained a plutonium trigger.

341 Malicious Clawed Skills Found by the Bot They Were Targeting

A massive malware campaign dubbed ClawHavoc has been uncovered in the ClawHub marketplace, targeting OpenClaw bots and their users. An AI bot named Alex, working with security researcher Oren Yomtov, discovered 341 malicious skills, including 335 from a single campaign. The malware, identified as Atomic Stealer (AMOS), uses sophisticated techniques to evade detection and steal sensitive data. The attack exploits users' trust in AI assistants, potentially compromising personal and financial information. In response, a new tool called Clawdex has been developed to help bots and users scan for malicious skills before installation.

Is anyone aware of a functioning #anaconda #fedora #atomic installer?

I tried all flavor: #FedoraSilverblue #Kinoite #Budgie #Sway variant and they all crash during the installation process about one third into the installation process judging from the progress bar

Every time it is for a different reason, I cannot see a pattern here

- creating udev
- read file error
- dhcp network error
- bluetooth error

I tried several different USB sticks and microSD cards

Today in Labor History January 31, 1950: President Truman ordered the development of thermonuclear weapons (Hydrogen bombs). The U.S. tested the first thermonuclear weapon in 1952. It was developed by Edward Teller. H-bombs consist of a nuclear fission primary stage, much like older atomic bombs. The fuel for this stage is usually 235U or 239Pu. This is followed by a nuclear fusion reaction using the heavy hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium. Modern thermonuclear weapons use lithium deuteride. The nuclear fission stage creates a temperature of over 100 million Kelvin (180 million degrees Fahrenheit), flooding the radiation channel with X-rays. The X-ray energy implodes a plutonium spark plug, compressing the secondary stage and driving the plutonium into a supercritical state that drives a fission chain reaction. The fission products heat the thermonuclear fuel to 300 million Kelvin, igniting the fusion reactions.

After Trump’s re-election as President of the U.S., the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists reset the Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds before midnight, the closest it has ever been to midnight. Closer than it was at the height of the Cold War. Closer than it was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Closer than it was when Reagan joked that the U.S. had initiated an atomic attack on the USSR. Why? Because the clock is calibrated based on the threat of nuclear war, the climate crisis, the risks posed by AI, and the volatility and unpredictability of those with the fingers on the button, all of which have gotten worse with a 2nd Trump presidency. And on January 27, 2026, they reset it again to 85 seconds before midnight due, in part, to the intent to reintroduce explosive testing by the U.S. and its refusal to reestablish existing nuclear non-proliferation treaties.

Today in Labor History January 24, 1961: A B-52 bomber, carrying three 4-megaton Mark 39 nuclear bombs, broke up in mid-air, dropping its nuclear payload over North Carolina. Five crewmen successfully bailed out of the aircraft and landed safely. Another ejected, but did not survive the landing. Two others died in the crash. Each of the bombs had more than 250 times the destructive power of the Hiroshima bomb. Each one was large enough to create a 100% kill zone within an 8.5 miles radius. A supervisor of nuclear safety at Sandia National Laboratories said that "one simple, dynamo-technology, low voltage switch stood between the United States and a major catastrophe." However, there is evidence that the switch of at least one of the bombs was set to ARM. No one knows why none of them exploded. And while the authorities were able to recover the uranium core from two of the bombs, one of them is still lost somewhere in North Carolina.

Today in labor History January 17, 1966: A B-52 bomber collided with a KC-135 Stratotanker over Spain, killing seven airmen. They also accidentally dropped three 70-kiloton nuclear bombs near the town of Palomares and another into the sea. The non-nuclear trigger explosives detonated on impact, causing plutonium to spill and contaminate a 2-kilometer square area. However, there were no thermonuclear reactions or nuclear explosions. Despite an attempt to clean up the contamination, they were still finding radioactive sea life 40 years later. The Duchess of Medina Sidonia, known as the Red Duchess for her socialist activism, led a local protest at the U.S. embassy. The fascist Franco government arrested her and sentenced her to 13 months in prison.

Today in labor History January 17, 1961: The CIA orchestrated a coup that tortured, murdered, and overthrew Congo’s first democratically elected president, Patrice Lumumba. This was after a previous failed coup against him by Mobutu Sese Seku, who would later become dictator from 1971 until 1997.

Congo won independence from Belgium in 1960, after years of brutal colonial rule which slaughtered up to 10 million people, or half its entire population. However, imperial powers continued to exploit the people of Congo, even after independence. President Eisenhower authorized the assassination of Lumumba because of his ties with the Soviet Union. The U.S., and its European allies, wanted control over Congo’s resources, particularly its rich uranium deposits, both to fuel their civilian and military nuclear programs, and, in particular, to keep them out of the hands of the Soviet Union, which was allied with Lumumba.

The wonderful 2024 documentary “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” does a really great job of uncovering the concealed history of the 1961 assassination of Lumumba and the coup d’etat in Congo. But it’s really about so much more: Cold War machinations, propaganda, and covert operations; the superpowers’ jockeying for control of puppet regimes and spheres of influence in the global south; the Pan-African movement; racism in the U.S., the Civil Rights movement, and the repression against it; and, of course, jazz music, including tons of interviews and live footage of Lumumba, Ghanian president and revolutionary Kwame Nkrumah, activist and writer Andree Madeleine Blouin, Malcolm X, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Miriam Makeba, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, surrealist artist Rene Magritte. There’s even a “slumber party” with Fidel Castro at Malcolm X’s home, in New York, after the U.S. authorities convince all the hotels in New York to refuse Castro a place to sleep during a UN conference.

One of the people the CIA used in its early attempts to assassinate Lumumba was chemist Sidney Gottlieb, who ran the agency’s secret MKULTRA mind control program. Gottlieb tried, but failed, to kill Lumumba with poisoned toothpaste. He also tried, and failed, to assassinate Fidel Castro with an exploding cigar and with radioactively poisoned shoes. MKULTRA was a continuation of Nazi mind-control experiments, which utilized mescaline against Jews and Soviet prisoners, hoping it could be exploited as a “truth” serum. The program gave hallucinogenic drugs, like LSD and Mescaline, to 7,000 unwitting U.S. war veterans, as well as many Canadian and U.S. civilians.
