Today in labor History January 17, 1966: A B-52 bomber collided with a KC-135 Stratotanker over Spain, killing seven airmen. They also accidentally dropped three 70-kiloton nuclear bombs near the town of Palomares and another into the sea. The non-nuclear trigger explosives detonated on impact, causing plutonium to spill and contaminate a 2-kilometer square area. However, there were no thermonuclear reactions or nuclear explosions. Despite an attempt to clean up the contamination, they were still finding radioactive sea life 40 years later. The Duchess of Medina Sidonia, known as the Red Duchess for her socialist activism, led a local protest at the U.S. embassy. The fascist Franco government arrested her and sentenced her to 13 months in prison.

Heute vor 60 Jahren: Am 17. Januar 1966 kollidieren über #Palomares eine mit 4 Wasserstoffbomben bestückte B-52 und ein Tankflugzeug in der Luft. Die mit #Plutonium gefüllten Zünder von zwei der Bomben explodierten und setzten mehrere Kilo hoch radioaktives Plutonium-239 frei.

Dear Mr. Megliola,
I am writing on behalf of the City and County of San Francisco and the San Francisco Department of
Public Health (SFDPH) regarding an exceedance of the plutonium-239 (Pu-239) air monitoring
Action Level at Hunters Point Shipyard (HPS), Parcel C, which occurred in November 2024 and
was reported to SFDPH in October 2025.
According to information recently shared with SFDPH, the November 2024 air monitoring result for
Pu-239 approximately exceeded twice the Action Level concentration. The Pu-239 measurement
was identified from an air filter sample collected during field work operations, including asphalt
grinding, at Parcel C.
The City and County of San Francisco is deeply concerned by both the magnitude of this exceedance
and the failure to provide timely notification. Such a delay undermines our ability to safeguard
public health and maintain transparency. Immediate notification is a regulatory requirement and is
critical for ensuring community trust and safety. We respectfully and firmly request that, moving
forward, any exceedance or significant radiological finding be reported to SFDPH without delay.

Hunters Point a former navy base and an environmental disaster. Not only was there a lab where they did human radiation experiments but now apparently they have detected airborne PU-239

they also used the shipyard in an abortive attempt to see if they could decontaminate the USS Independence (CVL-22) which was parked one mile away from an Operation Crossroads test to see how ships handled nearby nuclear detonations.#USSindependance #nuclear #plutonium
