JBM has been working on refactoring #Kdenlive’s keyframing system and, along the way, is developing a dopesheet (an interface that displays all parameters in a single timeline). Below is an initial prototype.

Check out the details in the status report:

OK, this is weird...

Someone managed to make #KDE look like MacOS and package it as an OS called PearOS.

It even has a black loading screen just like MacOS (with a chomped-off pear instead of apple), the spinning ball of ~~doom~~ loading, the works.

Sadly, however, they've also implemented a version of liquid ass, so the CPU is constantly jumping to 25% usage :neocat_o_o:

Now, I wonder if anyone has made KDE look like #GNOME... Because I'd actually like to try that.

Drawing of Konqi kde dragon, leaning on the computer desk and Xenia the linux fox, sitting on the edge of the chair. They are deep in thought looking at the many screens. It's very late at night and the room is lit mostly by the screens. They are determined to finish what they've started. You can't see their faces but the butts look very nice.

While I've been partly running Linux (and BSD) throughout the years - this week I celebrate 5 years with nothing but Linux on the desktops and servers in my house (and elsewhere where I get to choose).

This deserves/requires cake!

Does the free desktop have a concept for allow-listing what app can send notifications? And if so, which desktop environments would implement it?

Most of the time I don’t want any notification at all on my laptop, but sometimes I would like to make an exception e.g. for a single pomodoro timer.

Кедовский брызь совершенно отвратителен, что стиль, что иконы. Но я героически попробую перенести его использование, может быть, хотя бы неделю, смогу смириться с несовершенством его.

@adhisimon ultimately i feel like developers of both need to work together a bit

#GNOME should actually implement a decent server-side title bar for apps that don't want to bother making a client-side one

#KDE should stop permanently messing with dconf settings in a way that requires power-user tools to roll back (perhaps by implementing its own variant of gnome-settings-daemon that only executes in plasma sessions)

@rnd I agree with most of yours. Love GNOME because the default is as simple as that to be usefull and elegant.

But many people dislike it because GNOME is too different from their previous desktop. And KDE gives you a lot more control and customization options.

Anyway, GNOME is my choice. Anyone doesn't like it, can choose KDE or others freely.

so after using both #GNOME and #KDE #Plasma for a while, here are the things i like about both:

  • GNOME has good touchpad gestures, whereas Plasma seems not to
  • GNOME is better at hiding settings that are not applicable to the current system -- for instance, KDE System Settings shows a touchscreen item for me, even though my computer does not have a touchscreen
  • GNOME has a way better #esperanto localization
  • GNOME's way of combining an app launcher and app switcher appeals to me personally
  • GNOME's app launcher doesn't bother with the XDG categorization of apps and allows the user to easily put app launchers in folders and sort them however they like -- the XDG categorization is not bad, but it can cause clutter (e.g. i have stellarium installed, and it is the only app in the 'education' category)
  • as does the fact that GNOME's top panel is quite narrow, more like that of macOS or iOS/Android, leaving more space for the actual windows
  • GNOME has built-in integration with #usbguard, automatically allowing new USB devices authorization, but only when the screen is unlocked, whereas if i want to use it with KDE, i have to use usbguard-notifier and manually approve each device
  • GNOME's weather applet supports my city, whereas KDE's doesn't
  • GNOME doesn't seem to mess with KDE settings the way KDE messes with GNOME's, when i was switching from KDE back to GNOME i had to use gnome tweaks and dconf editor to reset a bunch of settings, this should not be a thing, the user should not have to use unofficial tools to un-screw-up their settings after using a different DE for a while
  • KDE is better at offering the user new interesting functionality in a non-intrusive way
  • KDE is more customizable, i don't care for that much myself, but there are people who want to "make their computer their own" and i can see why KDE would appeal to those users
  • KDE's tray items are more useful than GNOME's, allowing more things to be done without opening the settings app, i in particular like how the hotspot functionality is available straight away
  • KDE providing its own server-side title bar to apps is a good thing, i know that GNOME devs prefer client-side titlebars, but for windowed games and apps that don't need one, having to use libdecor is probably unnecessary

overall i still like GNOME more and will keep using it, but i'm now more informed about both

Wayland support requested

When I try using Wayland, I suffer from a very weird issue and I have been unable to get anywhere close to figuring it out.

I use Fedora 43 with KDE on a 4k monitor, with the scaling set to 125%. About half the time when I log in, some programs (specifically Firefox, as well as my own JavaFX project) ends up being unscaled (i.e. everything is very small).

It only happens on these applications, and only sometimes.

When it happens, logging out and logging back in fixes it. I have never seen the problem happening after I log in again.

Interestingly enough, when the problem occurs, starting Floorp (another Firefox-based browser) does not exhibit this problem.

It's like some programs get the wrong scale factor, but only sometimes.

I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. Any ideas?

I've just installed Cairo Dock in my SBC Raspberry Pi5, using pi-packages the Add/Remove software utility.

What a mess I created.

Cairo Dock could not work properly. The gfx output indicated that it rendered in a manner that Wayland does not like.
I could see the window borders of the Dock which are invisible on Xorg in MX-Linux. Cairo Dock collapsed and expanded horizontally when you moved the mouse over it, with none of the applets reacting properly. They did not spawn the programs they were representing

I then proceded with sudo apt install cairo-doc from bash, after removal in pi-packages.
All dependecies were easily installed, but the rendering of my beloved Cairo dock still failed, making it still unusuable, in Wayland on the Pi5 SBC with 8GiB RAM

I will investigate, but for now I can't get the gorgeous Cairo dock to easily work on Wayland on the SBC Raspberry Pi5
