Stuck on Windows 10 for essential systems? Microsoft’s extended security updates might be a lifeline—but only if you meet strict eligibility and deal with rising costs. Curious how it all comes together?

Why do some Linux distros include by default features that are hard to use like multiple shortcuts to console and "open as root" in the right click menu?

@chronohart

Never used it myself, but I can recommend this website for self-learning the basics of Linux: linuxjourney.com/

I can also try my best to answer any questions anyone may have about Linux.

As an aside, I'd recommend Linux Mint for beginners due to its resemblance to Windows and ease of use with many built-in graphical tools. ZorinOS is also another one with an optional premium version.

For new users, unless they're more used to a MacOS-style interface, I'd actually advise to keep away from #GNOME as its interface will be confusing to (former) Windows users.

This blog post by ZorinOS may also be of some help: blog.zorin.com/2025/05/28/wind

Feel free to DM me if you want any clarification or understanding, or just reply to this comment.

For those that are slightly savvy, I'd recommend the Debian Handbook. It definitely requires some knowledge and there are some debian-specific components of it, but it helps with a general understanding of how Linux itself works:

So, moved a Windows 10 machine (which I have not used in a year after moving to Linux on desktop) to a virtual machine.

Key thing if you do this with an existing install is you have to copy your "Windows product key" to activate that new image. They hide it from you.

(EDIT: IF you are already running Linux on the machine, forget all the fancy stuff below and type:

sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM

This will print out that license code)

Instructions below copied from a Microsoft forum.
