Além de servirem para o voo, as penas das aves também permitem isolar a temperatura de seus corpos, realçar o seu tato e atrair seu parceiro pelas suas cores exuberantes (apesar destas funções não necessariamente ocorrerem em todas as penas).

These colorful structures are feathers, seen at a microscope. They have a central “stick” called rachis where many filaments called barbs emerge. These barbs can also divide into smaller bristles called barbules.
Despite being used for flying, feathers can also regulate the body temperature of the bird, improve its sensitivity and attract their sexual partners with their exuberant colors (although not all feathers have the same functions).
