Standing on a path in Aarhus Botanical Gardens. The sky is deep blue with a deep patch of white clouds coming in from our right. Left and right, slopes of grass and trees and bushes in verdant greens. Ahead, a fabulous amazing ancient willow tree on the right has grown over the path creating a natural tunnel with horseshoe-shaped entrance. Where we are, everything is blanketed in deep black shadow. Just before the entrance to the willow, in a straight line, everything is in full sunlight. The effect is like a journey from a dark world ending as we have found the portal back to light.

A quiet corner, a residential street, Aarhus city centre. A white two-storey house gable wall filled with a mural of a gorgeous ginormous David Bowie singing into a microphone. A couple lives in the house. She’s a Bowie fan. She was feeling sad during the Covid lockdown. To cheer her up, he surprised her with the mural for her birthday. Below it: two wooden benches. Flanking it: two low narrow evergreen trees. Beside it: an eye-catching bushy lovely green tree with red berries. The sky is light blue with wispy streaks of white cloud. The sun is behind us. It has cast the shadow of the berry tree on the white wall behind it. It has cast the shadow of a tall building behind us onto the surface of the road and half-way up the Bowie wall. The black shadow formed by the point of its roof looks like an arrow pointing up to draw attention to Bowie

In the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, lorry driver Rob McKenna was always grumpy because it always rained on him, every day, everywhere. Unbeknownst to him, he was a rain god. Clouds wanted ‘to be near him, to love him, to cherish him and to water him.'

Rob McKenna popped into my mind when I fell across yet another photo where two weathers are splitting the same sky. I wonder if everyone sees this often too or if weather gods just like to go to war above me.

Looking across a bay in Galway. The sky above is a swirl of clouds. The upper layer is stormy black rain clouds. Below them, summer-blue sky with fluffy white clouds. This has created a shift in shadow and light on the earth below. The sea is deep bottle green, rippling in shadow. Then it is bright light green where it reaches the narrow sandy beach on the far side. The beach is not in shadow. The sand shines white-beige in sharp sunlight. We can clearly see a few people walking, a red and yellow lifeguard hut, some houses and woods beyond it. I can remember that I took this photo during a period of about 3.7 minutes when it was dry and light between hours of torrential rain one Summer day.

The Danish for umbrella is paraply. A rain shield.

We see centuries-old redbrick houses and buildings with red tiled roofs, the turrets and spires of historic buildings and churches, the cathederal or Domkirke spire. In the distance, a wood sloping down to the sea and cranes by the harbour. The sky above is two weathers at once, as if the gods are fighting over who gets to decide. A dark black cloud looms above like winter. Below it, light blue sky and white clouds, like spring. The left half of the city is shining bright in the sharp lightfall. The right half is covered in dark shadow.

Galway. Standing in fields that are several shades of almost neon green in the bright Irish lightfall. Ahead, a small bay, the seawater calm cold silver-blue. Across the bay, a low rolling mountain. The sky above is two weathers at once, as if the gods are fighting over who gets to decide. A deep black cloud looms above like winter. Below it, light blue sky with fluffy white clouds, like spring. The right half of the mountain is bright in daylight, green fields and little houses visible. The left half of the mountain is cloaked invisibly and ominously in a gigantic black shadow, as if a creature from the Shades is devouring it.

Shrubs and windowframe cast shadows across a sheer white curtain. Patterns of leaves and waves.

@baz Didn't know #ShadowSaturday was a thing, but here's an entry, at sundown from atop the summit between Greenfield and Carmel Valley California in the last hours of a 3 day, 1000km ride. I made the finish in Santa Cruz in the wee hours of the morning after.

Ah yes:

A photo of blue sky on a sunny day, but the sun is just about covered by a thick black cloud, which is casting a dark shadow onto a neighbouring cloud. At the base of the picture is the horizon - a wind-blown tree and a glint of sunlight from a strip of distant sea.
