This close-up photograph shows a hand-carved wooden devil mask from the traditional Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet carnival in southwestern Germany. It is an “Ahland” from the Narrenzunft Rottenburg. The mask has a strikingly expressive, demonic face with a warm brown-beige to terracotta skin tone, hand-painted in realistic yet slightly exaggerated folk-art style. The face is dominated by two very large, round, cartoonishly oversized white eyes with jet-black circular pupils that stare straight ahead. Thick, strongly arched black eyebrows sit high above the eyes, drawn in bold curved lines that add to the dramatic expression. Deep forehead wrinkles are carved and painted in dark lines. On the forehead grow two short, thick, brown wooden horns that curve gently backward and slightly outward, like small goat or devil horns. The nose is broad and somewhat flattened, painted in the same facial tone. The most eye-catching feature is the wide-open mouth: it grins with a toothy, mischievous, almost gleeful expression. The upper and lower teeth are bright white and clearly visible, forming a big toothy smile. The lips are painted vivid red to dark red, and a long, pointed green beard, that looks like foliage, flows downward from the chin. The mask is framed and partially covered by thick, fluffy, creamy-white lambskin that surrounds the entire face like a hood or collar. The fur is shaggy and dense, giving the impression that the devil is wearing a sheep's pelt disguise.
