<p>Time Machine backups, Spotlight search, iCloud Drive storage and QuickLook previews are each very useful when and where you want them. But there are occasions when you want to exclude folders and files from their reach, or items are excluded when you want them included. This article is a brief reference to how you can control exclusion and inclusion.</p>
<h4>Time Machine backups</h4>
<p>Time Machine has several mechanisms for excluding items from its backups. The first of those used to be detailed in its Standard Exclusions listed in the hidden file .exclusions.plist at the top level of every backup, but that file has gone missing in backups made since upgrading to Tahoe, and is nowhere to be found.</p>
<p>This listed several categories of exclusions, of which the first are apiExclusionPaths, added by individual third-party apps. The equivalent of what used to appear in the previous StdExclusions.plist was given under the standardExclusionPaths key, containing:</p>
<ul>
<li>.DocumentRevisions-V100 – the version database on each volume,</li>
<li>.Spotlight-V100 – Spotlight metadata,</li>
<li>.Trashes – contents of Trash folders,</li>
<li>.fseventsd – the File System Events database,</li>
<li>/Library/Logs – traditional text log files,</li>
<li>/Users/Guest – guest user files,</li>
<li>/private/var (partial) – various transient files,</li>
</ul>
<p>among many other ephemeral items.</p>

<p>In my recent look at <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2025/12/12/did-you-know-your-photos-are-being-syndicated/">what happens with image attachments</a> in Messages, I came across a whole tree of directories in which the generation of QuickLook thumbnails and previews are blocked, in what macOS calls a <em>QuickLook protected directory.</em> This article tries to explain how those work, and how thumbnails and previews can be blocked.</p>
<h4>How thumbnails are obtained</h4>
<p>When you select a file in a Finder view that should result in the display of its thumbnail in the Preview pane in that window, the Finder requests it from the <code>QuickLookThumbnailingDaemon</code>. That queues the request until the daemon can look for the image in its memory cache. If it can’t find it there it then looks in the disk cache, first at low quality 20 x 20 icon mode. If it still can’t find it, it queues a request for a fresh thumbnail to be generated. That will use the file data together with the appropriate qlgenerator code to create a thumbnail, which is then returned and cached.</p>
<p>Some years ago, Apple started to protect that thumbnail disk cache from access by third-parties, and it’s now locked away as a DataVault. QuickLook selects the appropriate qlgenerator depending on the UTI of the file, and that can occasionally result in a mismatch and failure to generate a thumbnail. Viewing metadata in the Finder

<p>The Finder can display more information about files than their size and datestamps, and for some types of file can extend to a lot of useful metadata. These are shown in the Preview pane containing the file’s QuickLook thumbnail, in the Get Info dialog, and some can be added to the columns shown in List View. This article explains where those come from, and how you can customise what the Finder displays.</p>
<h4>Metadata collection</h4>
<p>Within a second or two of a new file being created, or an existing file being saved, Spotlight’s indexing services analyse that file and extract both metadata and, where possible, content to be added to that volume’s indexes. Metadata that is common to most or all files, including datestamps, and the contents of any extended attributes, that might include titles and keywords, is indexed separately from that extracted from a file’s contents.</p>
<p>In between those are metadata embedded in file data. They’re specific to certain types of file, for example EXIF metadata that is commonly included in images, so are extracted by the specialist mdimporter for that file type, then incorporated into the indexes on that volume.</p>

<p>One of the most fundamental changes brought by the Mac was the ability to open and edit files without having to explicitly specify which app to use. Instead of typing in a command telling an app to open a file, we can simply double-click the file and the Mac already knows which app to use. This relies on every file having a type, and the association between file types and apps. This article explains how that is now accomplished in macOS.</p>
<h4>History</h4>
<p>Classic Mac OS relies on two four-character codes assigned to every file designating their creator and type. An app has a type of APPL, and a text file a type of TEXT. A text file created by the TeachText app might have a creator code of TTXT and a type code of TEXT. Double-click on that file and the Finder looks for the app (with a type code of APPL) with the creator code of TTXT, and asks that to open the file. Associations between app creator codes and file types are also built into the Finder’s Desktop databases to relate icons with file types, forming the heart of the Desktop metaphor.</p>
<p>Although Mac OS X retained type and creator codes, early versions relied on filename extensions to determine the type of files, a feature of older operating systems and NeXTSTEP. Apple therefore invented a new system for identification and classification of file types and more using <strong>Uniform Type Identifiers</strong>, introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. $Timestamps on files and folders are important, and can be used for many different purposes, from sorting files to find the most recent, to providing evidence in court. Each file (and directory) in APFS has four separate timestamps you can use: <ul> <li>Created, termed in APFS <code>create_time</code>, gives “the time that this record was created”.</li> <li>Modified, <code>mod_time</code>, “the time that this record was last modified”.</li> <li>Last opened, <code>access_time</code>, “the time that this record was last accessed”.</li> <li>Attributes Modified, <code>change_time</code>, “the time that this record’s attributes were last modified”.</li> </ul> Although the Finder only displays those to the nearest second, the macOS API readily provides fractions of a second, commonly resolved to milliseconds, and the raw values are saved as nanoseconds since 00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. The first three are those most commonly used, although the last can be relevant in backups in particular. If you want to see which file in a folder is the oldest there, look for the oldest time Created. If you want to know which was most recently changed, look for the latest Modified time. If you use Apple Quicklook in the Finder to review your RAW files (pressing space bar) don't upgrade to macOS 15.4! It has broke for me. Seeing other reports online as well. Just get a black window unless you resize it and then the image appears

Fantastic work. There is some fine-tuning that could happen, but that are separate issues to be discussed. Generally this works great and it is amazing to finally see Quick Look support after sooooooo many years.
