"AI companies like Meta and OpenAI have been offering multimillion-dollar pay packages to top talent, hoping to lure the best researchers and engineers away from their competitors. But there’s another dimension of the AI talent wars that has garnered far less attention: the massive shortage of electricians, plumbers, and heating and cooling technicians in the US who can build the physical data centers that power AI.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2024 and 2034, there will be a shortage of roughly 81,000 electricians on average each year in the US, measured in terms of unfilled jobs.

The BLS projects the number of employed electricians to grow 9 percent over the next decade, “much faster than the average for all occupations.” One McKinsey study came to a more dire conclusion: Between 2023 and 2030, it estimates that an additional 130,000 trained electricians—as well as 240,000 construction laborers and 150,000 construction supervisors—would be needed in the US.

The rapid construction of AI data centers across the country is likely a major driver of demand for skilled tradespeople.

According to a May blog by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers—a labor union representing electrical workers in the US, Canada, and US territories—some local affiliates “are facing single data center projects that require two, three, sometimes four times their current membership.”"

Ars Technica: Australian plumber is a YouTube sensation. “Everyone has their favorite oddity: ASMR, jazzy pop song covers, cooking channels, or what have you. But DIY enthusiasts in particular are missing out if they’re not watching Drain Cleaning Australia, featuring an Australian plumber known only as Bruce as he goes about his daily business of shooting high-powered water jets into […]

Saw these drain worms at someone's house and it gave me goosebumps. We need to give plumbers more credit after seeing this kind of stuff.

@markjustmark There are an awful lot of undiagnosed NDs out there who are clearly considered fair game by "professionals".

I am still not worked up and just to clear, your "edgiest of edge case" is my life.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

PS the plumber knew of our Second Born's health issues as he screwed us over.

Okay knowlegeable peeps. I got the heat tape gently coiled along the pipes under my trailer. I saw covering it with insulation may present a fire hazard, it is uncovered. I saw it should not cross itself. I have a long coil of surplus. Can I bury it for a heat source for the geckos and miss snake and maybe stray kitties, or is that a fire hazard so I should look up the instructions for cutting and covering with tape to end it? Mostly clay in the dirt.

On the flipside I think #InternetCafés obviously need to shift as trends changed.

  • Not just in [P.R.] China but globally...

I seriously wished more of those would actually expand more into the #technical part and provide #DataRecovery and #Repairs, similar to #Electricians and #Plumbers do.

  • Cuz with all the shit being forced down peoples' throats re: #Apps one can say that a #Smartphone may just be their lifeline.

Just don't ask someone for a #wangba in China unless you want to get some seriously weird looks...

"I came as soon as I heard. So, what's the angle here?"

"90 degrees, sir."

"No, I mean, what is the modus operandi?"

"No hablo español, señor."

"That's not Spanish. That's Latin."

"Oh."

"I think you need a little lesson about the relationship between Latin and the romance languages."

[Several hours later.]

"... and that's how you cook a lasagna. [Tosses oven mitts to the floor.] Now that you know everything about nuclear physics, can you tell me what happened here?"

"From what I've been able to piece together, our victim was a scammer."

"What scam did he run?"

"He pretended to be a plumber to gain access to the residence and steal the jewelry while the owners weren't looking."

"That would explain why his pants reveal so much of his butt crack, but how did he meet his demise?"

"Someone got wind of what he was doing, and decided to give him a taste of his own medicine."

"Yeah, that would explain why his mouth is stuffed with pills." [Bends down to pick up a pill bottle that had fallen nearby and read it. On the bottle is written "His own medicine."]

I was calling plumbers to get an idea of what a repair might cost, and one of them very obviously used an AI “assistant” to answer their calls. 🫤 Don’t do that. Totally useless.
