Wow! Amazed that 62% of 7,280 people mainly use GNU Linux/ UNIX as their “personal time”operating system (ie when they have a free choice). Decent sample size but how different/similar is Fedi to the rest of the world? And has this percentage changed recently (ie because of recent events)? Fascinating developments… love to know more. 😊

Если у Вас в качестве основной или единственной операционной системы стоит Windows, то самый быстрый и удобный способ начать пользоваться Ubuntu - встроить ядро Linux прямо в Windows. Эта встроенная в операционную систему Windows функция позволяет обойтись без монитора виртуальных машин (гипервизора) или мильтизагрузки (dual-boot). Ядро Linux запускается на облегчённой служебной виртуальной машине на основе компонентов гипервизора Hyper-V. Таким образом после установки дистрибутив Linux оказывается полностью интегрирован в Windows, и позволяет пользоваться преимуществами обеих ОС при разработке с минимальными затратами в аппаратных, временных и человеческих ресурсах. С помощью WSL можно даже запускать графические приложения Linux ( см. примечания ), но, скорее всего, Вам это не понадобится.

Sad news – I just heard that Prof. J. Leslie Keedy, known for his work on the MONADS and Speedos operating systems as well as the Timor programming language, passed away on August 10th.

Prof. Keedy retired from the University of Ulm in 2005 and held previous positions at the University of Bremen, the University of Newcastle, N.S.W. (AU) and TU Darmstadt.

RIP, dear colleague.

While I really like GNOME and its focused approach and environment, I can't help but enjoy KDE as much if not more with its customization options.

Figured I'd change my desktop layout for a change and came with GNOMEsque / macOS / Win11 inspired one in about 5/10 minutes. The top bar only appears if the mouse hovers over it, making the desktop in general very minimalistic.

The only problem comes with maximized windows, sometimes the top bar comes up if I want to close a window, for instance. Still trying to find a solution for that.

Another thing which never made sense to me in #Linux. Is that there are two different programs to add a new user. And they got confusing names too. I was hoping things are better on #Alpine. But nope.

There is useradd and adduser. First, I think there shouldn't be two different programs to do the same thing. Second, even if there are two, they should have names which one can easily guess which one is for what.

I remember one was higher level and the other was lower level. If there should really be two programs, I think the lower level one should be something like adduser-lowlevel or __adduser. So one can easily guess it isn't going to be used for most use cases.

I wonder how much Alpine people are open to such these changes. Linux is the only operating system which I've used extensively. So I don't know about other OSes and if they do better or worse.

Oh and there are addgroup and groupadd too.

Приветствую! Когда мне сначала просто захотелось, а потом потребовалось и для работы изучить C++, я сильно удивился, что информации касаемо пары C/C++ информации вроде много, но она уж слишком сильно не структурирована и не систематизирована. Одно лишь объяснение указателей мне потребовалось очень много времени искать, потом я понял что такого нет. В интернете есть много объяснений и информации, но это все либо рерайт чужих статей либо просто бессвязный бред где порой кажется что сам человек не проверяет информацию либо просто сам не знает. Да и честно говоря очень мало понятных и рабочих кусков кода с объяснением решения, которое можно было бы протестировать на работоспособность. Поэтому я решил здесь в данном блоге (Habr идеальное место для этого) собрать в кучу как свои мысли так и свой опыт. А также опыт других людей которые также использовали данный инструмент в своей работе или просто как хобби. Также стоит отметить, что на мой взгляд для изучения C++ надо начать именно с C, но применять его врятли получится потому что как бы C не был хорош, все же на фоне C++, для современных задач он не полноценен (но тут я сразу уточню, что технология превосходная и я до сих пор удивляюсь как кто-то смог создать подобный язык, с настолько простым и удобным функционалом, который используется и сейчас, но в современной разработке он не функционален, хотя дальше я опишу сферу применения данного языка программирования).

An Elf Odissey! #dreamos64 I recently added support for basic ELFs in my hobby #kernel but, it required me to dig into some very obscure issues caused by some changes in llvm and their linker.

Basically the introduction of large sections in #llvm broke the grub image, and caused more problems to my kernel.
